Dr. Catherine Black is an Associate Professor of French. Prior to coming to Simon Fraser University in 2009, she taught at other Canadian universities for thirty years. She has been awarded multiple teaching awards and one Leadership in Teaching Award from the Government of Ontario. Since she specializes in language pedagogy, she has advised new and senior colleagues, TAs and MA and PhD students on course design, and  innovative teaching techniques. In recent years, her research has shifted more towards L2 language learner motivation. She has co-authored several textbooks with her colleague Louise Chaput.
