Conceptual Outline
The basis of my project is to determine the service area for the ambulance service within the city of Vancouver.
Time becomes a large factor in a critical emergency. Seconds could determine the difference between life and death.
Where you live in Vancouver could prove a disadvantage when a critical situation arises and the need for paramedic help
is required. When minutes or seconds are at stake, it would be advantagous to know just how good Vancouver's ambulance
service is.
Determining the service area for ambulance service can assist in evaluating the ambulance program. Does the present ambulance
service provide enough coverage? Do ambulances reach their calls within an acceptable time frame? Which parts of the city of Vancouver
receive the most coverage? Which areas receive the least? Determining ambulance service areas could also assist in finding the location
of a new hospital or emergency ward. Or, to determine which ward to shut down with the least amount of disruption to service.
Through a simple analysis I have developed, my goal is to determine the ambulance service areas for different response times and
for different time periods within a day. I can then match enumeration areas to the service areas to determine the amount of people that
can be affected by certain variables. From the analysis I can determine, using the variables of time of day and compensation for traffic,
what areas have the greatest coverage and how many people are within these areas.
