Support Students

The Department of Geography is committed to enhancing the student experience.

Reflecting our guiding values of diversity and experiential learning, there are five key areas where your support is needed most:

Graduate Entrance Scholarships

Developing financial support for Geography Graduate Students is a key priority and critical to our future success. Entrance scholarships can help support qualified individuals who may be putting off this kind of educational opportunity for financial reasons and can help to recruit a more diverse and exceptional cohort of students.

Please consider a gift to the “Geography Graduate Endowment Fund”.

Undergraduate Student Experiential Learning

Broadening and deepening the experiential learning opportunities for undergraduate students is a priority and critical for preparing the workforce of tomorrow. Increased funding will allow us to deliver critical learning experiences and ensure fieldwork is accessible to all.

Please consider a gift to the “Geography Undergraduate Fieldwork Fund”.

Encouraging Diversity and Celebrating Excellence

We hope to establish awards that support students who are the first in their family to go to University as well as First Nations students.  We would also like to diversify the breadth of our awards that celebrate student excellence through in-kind gifts (e.g. lifetime software licences).

Upgrades to Teaching Equipment

We are looking to upgrade our teaching equipment and facilities to support innovative pedagogy and train the workforce of tomorrow.  We would be pleased to accept in-kind contributions in the form of targeted equipment and supplies from valued industry partners.

Guest Lecture Funding

We are hoping to bring more professional geographers and community leaders into the classroom to provide our students with valuable information about future job opportunities in the field.

If you would like to support an existing fund, you can do so by visiting our secure online giving page at and searching “geography”.

The Department of Geography is grateful for the ongoing generosity of its supporters!

Dear Donor of the Graduate Entrance Scholarship in Geography,

I am writing to you today to offer my sincere thanks as an award recipient. I am delighted and honoured and I deeply appreciate your contribution to my continuing education. As a PhD student in Geography, I plan to use the skills I accrue in my degree program to help reduce urban inequality through community-based research that above all strives to be inclusive of marginalized populations in the city. Thanks to the generosity of donors such as yourself, students like me can work and study without incurring the full financial burden that a postgraduate education places upon the individual, and we can focus on our studies without worrying about having to take employment outside the University. Someday I hope to be able to give back to the community by contributing in some small part to an award such as this one. Truly, your financial gift has enabled me to pursue advanced studies and remain a productive and contributing member of the Simon Fraser University community.
