Short Video Contest - That Awkward Moment
It’s an awkward moment, and it usually happens more than once for students majoring in geography. What moment are we talking about? It’s when someone asks you ‘you’re a geographer…what IS that?’ or ‘you’re studying geography, so does that mean that you colour maps?’ We keep our cool in the face of such questions and do our best to characterize our discipline in a way that others can appreciate its strengths and diversity.
SFU’s Department of Geography is inviting undergraduate and graduate students to submit short videos (30 to 120 seconds in length) that depict this ‘awkward moment’ and how to tackle such questions with grace. We’re looking for short videos that are creative and ideally have at least a touch of humour. Winning videos are likely to be featured on the department’s website and be used in other departmental activities.
We’re offering three amazing cash prizes. The first place submission will be awarded $500. We’re offering a prize of $300 for second place and $150 for third place.
Videos are to be submitted by November 20th. If you plan to submit a video for this contest you must let the faculty liaison, Dr. Valorie Crooks (firstname.lastname@example.org), know by October 20th. The winning videos will be announced on the Department’s Facebook page by December 20th. Everyone participating in your video project (whether on or off camera) will need to complete an electronic consent form for use of their image. Dr. Crooks will provide you with this link when you register your intent to submit to this contest along with details for how to submit your video.
