Professor Kobayashi has been a leader in human rights activism and scholarship over the last four decades with extensive publications on racism, gender, issues concerning LGBTQ and two-spirited communities, disability, immigration, housing rights and Japanese Canadians. Her most recent SSHRC grant with Jeff Masuda,“The Right to Remain”, is in partnership with community advocacy organizations in the Downtown East Side of Vancouver where rapidly increasing property prices and gentrification threaten the precarious residents in hundreds of single occupancy residences (SROs).
