Coldest Night of the Year — Alexis Haig

February 28, 2018

by Alexis Haig | Chair - Gerontology Graduate Caucus

On February 24th the Gerontology Graduate Caucus GGC participated in The Coldest Night of the Year (CNOY) Canada’s National Walk for Homelessness. This fundraiser and walk raises awareness and money for a local charity that provides services and support to homeless and at-risk families and youth. Our team participated in the New Westminster CNOY walk in support of Senior Services Society; a non-profit agency that provides housing social and support services to homeless and at-risk seniors in Metro Vancouver.

The event was a huge success Seven Gerontology students (both Graduate and PBD) joined the GGC team by helping to fundraise participating in the walk on event day or both. On the day of the event, our team walked 5 km along the New Westminster boardwalk to the Senior Services Society’s office and ended at the River Market for a warm post-walk meal. At Senior Service Society’s office we were able to connect with their staff and learn more about the services and programs that the agency provides.

Together the GGC team was able to raise a total of 1,225 for Senior Services Society. We would like to say a big thank you to the Gerontology Department community members friends and family who supported our efforts towards this event. We would also like to say a special thank you to Dr. Sarah Canham for introducing us to the CNOY event and for continuously supporting us throughout this fundraising event.

Stay tuned for more events with the GGC.
