Once you arrive

Once you arrive in Canada, there are a few things you should do as soon as possible to make sure that you receive the award funding in time and pay your fees before the deadline to avoid penalty charges:

  2. Open a Canadian Bank account. Learn more here →

*Please note that obtaining a social insurance number is required/mandatory for work permit holders; otherwise this step is optional. For questions on this matter, please contact International Services for Students.

Finances

Please note that you will only be able to receive the Mitacs Globalink Research Award after you have physically arrived in Canada, within one to two weeks after your arrival. This timeline may be impacted if student does not submit all mandatory forms required by Mitacs.

For undergraduate & graduate students: You will receive the award on your SFU student account as credits. The credits will be applied immediately to any outstanding fees first (e.g. Residence fees, etc.), if applicable. 

  • You can request a refund of the remainder to your Canadian bank account via direct deposit. How to request a refund.

For postdoctoral fellows, you will receive the award via payment services. Please keep a copy of all expense receipts to submit to your department for reimbursement.
