Medical Insurance

Step 1: Prepare for your arrival to British Columbia

Visiting research students residing in B.C. for less than six months are not eligible for the BC Medical Services Plan and must apply for short-term private coverage for the duration of their stay.

guard.me International Insurance offers basic insurance for unexpected illness or accidents. This plan does not provide coverage for pre-existing conditions. The daily rate is $2.30 per person per day with a minimum purchase of 40 days. Coverage is not automatic. To ensure you will receive the adequate coverage for your needs, please review the following policy documents:

You will need a unique Access Code from SFU in order to complete your online application. Please check your admission letter from SFU or contact gradintl@sfu.ca for further instructions.

Step 2: Demonstrate proof of coverage

For undergraduate students only: Please review the Visiting Research Scholar application process Step 4 and submit your medical insurance to the Registrar and Information Services front counter in person (Maggie Benston Centre, Burnaby campus) or by email to urecords@sfu.ca.

Please note: You must have coverage under B.C. Medical Services Plan (MSP) if you intend to increase your stay in B.C. for longer than 6 months and have a valid study or work permit.  (See eligibility requirements under "other individuals in B.C."). Apply for MSP coverage by mail as soon as you arrive in B.C. You will also need to purchase guard.me insurance (see step 1) to provide you with interim coverage during the waiting period for the B.C. Medical Services Plan. The waiting period consists of the balance of the month of arrival in B.C., plus two months before benefits can begin.
