Trudeau Foundation Doctoral Scholarship

Three-year program to train creative and engaged leaders, equipping outstanding doctoral candidates with tools to share and apply their research in their institutions and communities.

Award Value:
$40,000/year, plus $20,000
for travel/year for 3 years

Candidate Eligibility:

Must be already accepted into or in year one or two of a full-time doctoral program, and expected to complete their doctoral studies in 2026 or later;
Canadian citizens studying at a Canadian or an international institution;
International students enrolled in a doctoral program at a Canadian institution

How to Apply

Confirm that you meet all the criteria below before you apply. Check that your research in the humanities or social sciences relates to one of the Foundations' four themes

Register for the Foundation's Application portal.

Fill out the Application

Get in touch with your referees (2 are required - 1 must be an academic referee) - give them a deadline to complete before December 2nd, upload transcripts covering your entire post-secondary education in one PDF document.

Official transcripts are not required for your application, but you may be asked to provide official copies if your application is successful.

Suggestions for Reference Letters

Once you have entered the name and email address of your referees in the space provided in the application form, an email will automatically be sent to the referees, asking them to complete a predetermined referral form directly on the Foundation’s application portal. Referees must complete the predetermined referral form, which includes both narrative answers and numerical evaluations. We are no longer asking referees to upload their reference letter in PDF format on our application portal. We advise that you follow up with your referees to ensure they submit the completed form on time, by December 1, 2023 at 5:00 p.m EST.

February 5	Invitation to semi-finalists for Round One group interviews
February 20-23	Round One: Virtual group interviews and information sessions with semi-finalists
March 11	Invitation to finalists for Round Two individual interviews
March 27-29	Round Two: Final interviews with members of the Application and Nomination Review Committee
