Student Profile: Shirin Fartash Toloue
I completed my B.Sc and M.Sc in Electrical Engineering-Control Systems at Ferdowsi University of Mashhad, Iran. I did my Ph.D studies at the school of Mechatronic Systems Engineering Simon Fraser University. My research area have been mostly focused on designing novel controllers for power electronic applications.
WHY DID YOU CHOOSE TO COME TO SFU?
SFU is a very diverse and growing university. Specifically, it is one of the best ones in the area of Mechatronics in Canada.
TELL US ABOUT YOUR RESEARCH AND/OR PROGRAM.
My PhD research area was mostly focused on designing control methods for the systems working with motors including rowing exercise machine and instruments used in railway technology.
WHAT ARE YOU PARTICULARLY ENJOYING ABOUT YOUR STUDIES/RESEARCH AT SFU?
I really like the lively environment of the SFU. The faculties are also very helpful and encouraging. SFU labs are very equipped which helps the students to do their researches easily.
HAVE YOU BEEN THE RECIPIENT OF ANY MAJOR OR DONOR FUNDED AWARDS?
Yes, I received many awards during my studies at SFU including President Scholarship, Graduate Fellowship, Travel and Minor Research Award, Helmut and Hugo Eppich Family Graduate Scholarship and Kaiser Foundation for Higher Education Graduate Scholarship. These awards could cover part of my funding as well as the research expenses during my studies as a PhD student which were very helpful for me.
DESCRIBE YOUR PROGRAM FOR THOSE SEARCHING.
The program of Mechatronic Systems Engineering is a multidisciplinary program which gives you the opportunity to work on the projects related to different engineering field. This gives you a very good understanding of how and where different engineering fields meet each other. This is specifically good and gives you lots of opportunities if you want to enter to industry.
DO YOU HAVE ANY ADVICE FOR STUDENTS?
Yes, try to not be focused on pure research. During your studies try to make connections with different people in industry, go to coop and makes connections with industry as well.
