Student Profile: Natalie Virginia Ling
I am a teacher, aspiring writer, and graduate student in the liberal studies program at SFU. Based in Abbotsford, I teach literature at Rick Hansen Secondary and I live in a barn, renovated with my own two hands, in the heart of Sumas Mountain.
WHY DID YOU CHOOSE TO COME TO SFU?
I chose SFU because of the tone they set as a University. The programs offered, the instructors employed, and the general atmosphere that surrounds the school, whether at the Burnaby, Surrey, or Waterfront campuses, is one of shared knowledge and experience coupled with a deep encouragement for self expression and exploration.
HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR RESEARCH OR YOUR PROGRAM TO A FAMILY MEMBER?
Through the study of great writers and thinkers, I aim to learn the skills required to put forth my own ideas into the world through the magic of the written word.
WHAT ARE YOU PARTICULARLY ENJOYING ABOUT YOUR STUDIES/RESEARCH AT SFU?
I am enjoying the community developing around me through conversations with fellow students and instructors surrounding topics that spark passion and excitement.
HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR PROGRAM/POSTDOC POSITION TO SOMEONE STILL SEARCHING FOR A PROGRAM OR POSTDOC POSITION?
Graduate Liberal Studies is the place where one finds themselves if they are looking for a profound transformation in thought, understanding, and experience through a deep and ongoing conversation punctuated by history, philosophy, literature, and a community of like-minded individuals who come from a variety of different backgrounds.
