"Sherif is a wonderful colleague. Already, as a first-year MA student, he is working at the frontier of epistemology and the philosophy of logic. He is a skilled teacher and a deft philosophical interlocutor."
Dr. Thomas Donaldson
"Sherif has been an invaluable addition to our graduate program. Even though all of our interactions have been online, he has displayed deep intelligence, maturity, and creativity in his philosophical work. He is also very open to exploring new ideas with his colleagues. I am sure he would be an asset to any team."
Dr. Jennifer Wang
"What I enjoy the most is [the] rich intellectual environment, inclusiveness, diversity, and dynamic learning community."
Sherif Salem
Student Profile: Sherif Salem
Philosophy PhD student in the Faculty of Arts & Social Sciences
I hold an MSc. in Economics from Queen Mary University of London, and an MA in Philosophy from the American University in Cairo. I am interested in epistemology, metaphysics, philosophy of science, philosophy of logic/mathematics, metaphilosophy, history of analytic philosophy, and non-western philosophical traditions (particularly, Islamic philosophy and African philosophy). I am also the co-founder of the Middle East Society for Analytic Philosophy
WHY DID YOU CHOOSE TO COME TO SFU?
SFU MA philosophy program has a second to none reputation in academic training for students. It is by far, one of the best MA programs in North America and across the world.
HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR RESEARCH OR YOUR PROGRAM TO A FAMILY MEMBER?
At the moment, I am interested in questions about the nature of scientific knowledge. Is it objective? Does Science progress? Can Science be decolonized, and how? I am also fascinated by questions about the connections between logic, human reason, and rationality.
WHAT ARE YOU PARTICULARLY ENJOYING ABOUT YOUR STUDIES/RESEARCH AT SFU?
What I enjoy the most is its rich intellectual environment, inclusiveness, diversity, and dynamic learning community.
HAVE YOU BEEN THE RECIPIENT OF ANY MAJOR OR DONOR-FUNDED AWARDS? IF SO, PLEASE TELL US WHICH ONES AND A LITTLE ABOUT HOW THE AWARDS HAVE IMPACTED YOUR STUDIES AND/OR RESEARCH.
Andrew Mellon Post-MA fellowship: It allowed me to conduct various research projects on African Logic and epistemology
