Student Profile: Ritam Chakraborty
Philosophy master's student in the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences
I am a graduate student at the philosophy department pursuing my masters. I completed my undergraduate studies at Ashoka University, India majoring in philosophy. In philosophy, my interests are in ethics and logic, construed broadly. Besides, I also take interest in social and political philosophy, and Indian philosophy. In my free time, I enjoy reading mystery novels, thrillers, and poetry.
WHY DID YOU CHOOSE TO COME TO SFU?
The masters program in philosophy at SFU is one of the most well-recognized programs in the world. It provides rigorous academic training and support that sets us on track to pursue doctoral studies in philosophy.
HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR RESEARCH OR YOUR PROGRAM TO A FAMILY MEMBER?
In philosophy I am interested in questions like: are there ethical facts? If yes, what sort of facts are ethical facts? What is the normative position of emotions like anger in life? Do we have an obligation to not procreate? Is there a relation between ethical facts and mathematical facts? Besides, I am also curious about questions concerning inequality and justice.
WHAT ARE YOU PARTICULARLY ENJOYING ABOUT YOUR STUDIES/RESEARCH AT SFU?
I enjoy being part of a supportive and active graduate community with extremely engaging peers and outstanding faculty members.
HAVE YOU BEEN THE RECIPIENT OF ANY MAJOR OR DONOR-FUNDED AWARDS? IF SO, PLEASE TELL US WHICH ONES AND A LITTLE ABOUT HOW THE AWARDS HAVE IMPACTED YOUR STUDIES AND/OR RESEARCH.
Special Graduate Entrance Scholarship; Mitacs Graduate Fellowship: These two scholarships helped me fund and support my graduate studies and allowed me pursue my research interests.
