Student Profile: Matthew Taylor
I am originally from Durham in the North-East of England. I recently graduated from the University of Edinburgh with a degree in Geology and Physical Geography. Aside from education I am an avid field hockey player and skier.
WHY DID YOU CHOOSE TO COME TO SFU?
My undergraduate dissertation involved studying fluvial networks in the glacial valleys of the Lake District, Northern England. This experience motivated me to continue studying within this field. British Columbia offers the perfect location to continue these studies and through speaking with Dr. Brennand about potential research projects SFU became an obvious choice. I am excited to continue my education at SFU in a field I am passionate about.
TELL US ABOUT YOUR RESEARCH.
Essentially, my research looks to investigate the incision rates of the fluvial systems in the Thompson and Nicola Valleys. This will involved dating sediments found in the river terraces of both valleys to determine incision rate.
WHAT ARE YOU PARTICULARLY ENJOYING ABOUT YOUR RESEARCH AT SFU?
I have particularly enjoyed the opportunity to meet a wide range of post-grad students within the geography department. Learning about other students research and interests has made me feel a part of the wider SFU community whilst studying remotely from the UK.
HAVE YOU BEEN THE RECIPIENT OF ANY MAJOR OR DONOR-FUNDED AWARDS? IF SO, PLEASE TELL US WHICH ONES AND HOW THE AWARDS HAVE IMPACTED YOUR STUDIES AND/OR RESEARCH.
