Resource and Environment Management (Planning) master's student in the Faculty of Environment

Hello! I am a second year Master's student in the REM program here at SFU. I completed my undergraduate degree at the University of Victoria in geography and environmental studies a few years ago. Since then, I have been working as a cycling guide around the world with the active travel company, Backroads. I learned so much in this position, including two new languages, but after five years it’s time to settle down and go back to school.

WHY DID YOU CHOOSE TO COME TO SFU?

I chose SFU because of the interdisciplinary nature of REM. I'm interested in climate adaptation planning and really appreciate the environmental lens through which we approach planning. I also couldn't say no to living in Vancouver and using my time off to explore the beautiful north shore mountains!

HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR RESEARCH OR YOUR PROGRAM TO A FAMILY MEMBER?

I'm working with Dr. Cliff Atleo, the Skidegate Band Council, the Nuu-chah-nulth Tribal Council and the clean marine team to design, plan and implement the use of electric and hybrid marine vessels in remote Indigenous communities along the coast of British Columbia. Particularly, my research is considering the policy applications of this transition away from fossil fuels in the marine sector and how local, provincial, and federal governments can support Indigenous communities as they lead the way toward a clean energy future.

WHAT ARE YOU PARTICULARLY ENJOYING ABOUT YOUR STUDIES/RESEARCH AT SFU?

I love all of the wonderful students, profs and staff in REM! I have made lifelong friends and mentors whom I learn from and laugh with every day. I’m also very appreciative of the educational and professional opportunities provided through the program and the University.

HAVE YOU BEEN THE RECIPIENT OF ANY MAJOR OR DONOR-FUNDED AWARDS? IF SO, PLEASE TELL US WHICH ONES AND A LITTLE ABOUT HOW THE AWARDS HAVE IMPACTED YOUR STUDIES AND/OR RESEARCH.
