Dr. Aimee August Undergraduate Annual Scholarship
The Dr. Aimee August Undergraduate Annual Scholarship was officially established in 2008 at Simon Fraser University. The Scholarship has been awarded to SFU students since 1992 through the SFU Kamloops Program (renamed to First Nations Languages Program in 2018). Funding for this scholarship was generously provided by the Ministry of Advanced Education.
Awards will be granted annually in the Summer term to a student of aboriginal ancestry. The purpose of this award is to provide educational support to a student enrolled in a First Nations language academic program, who best demonstrates good academic standing combined with an appreciation of aboriginal language and culture. The FNLP Scholarship Committee will put forward a nomination based on the applications received.
Eligibility Requirements:
- Applicants must be of Aboriginal ancestry and enrolled as full-time students (three courses or more in an academic term). The award is restricted to students who have successfully completed a minimum of 24 credit hours in this SFU program.
- The student must demonstrate full-time enrollment in one of the previous three consecutive academic, since this is being awarded in the Summer term.
- Applicants must demonstrate sensitivity to the unique cultural and linguistic traditions of the aboriginal people. The committee will consider such criteria as the student’s extra-curricular activities within Indigenous organizations, personal research and the nature of studies being pursued. The FNLP Scholarship Committee may weigh such factors as parental and marital status, part-time employment and Band assistance in their decision.
The Junko N. Ikebuchi Memorial Scholarship/Bursary Fund
Background:
Mrs. Junko Ikebuchi was an elementary school teacher in School District #73 in Kamloops. She was a life long learner and world traveler. Her life was spent educating herself and those around her about using the strengths that every individual possesses to the best of their ability, and about being open to the wonder and the interconnectedness of the world. Having struggled herself to go to university and graduate school, she recognized the need for assistance for women pursing post-secondary education. When she came to Kamloops, she became very interested in First Nations language, local history and general anthropology. Junko envisioned establishing a fund to support students at the former site of Simon Fraser University in Kamloops, BC, where she learned the Secwepemctsin language and the value of local First Nations’ traditions and customs. Junko very much enjoyed her time spent with the faculty, staff and students there and hoped others would be able to have learning experiences that were just as posititve.
This is an externally funded award. The 2008 granting organization was the BC Interior Community Foundation (prevously known as the Kamloops Foundation).
Selection Criteria
a) Applicants in good academic standing.
b) Applicants are enrolled in at least one course in any of the following areas of study: First Nations Language, Local History or Anthropology courses.
c) The applicant will demonstrate a genuine interest in learning.
d) Applicants will demonstrate a non-competitive, sharing and helpful attitude toward other students with respect to learning and the dissemination of knowledge and experience.
e) Preference will be given to female applicants.
