Meet the Top Teams Moving On to the Venture Prize Finals
After an exciting first round of pitches, we’ve narrowed down the competition to our Top Finalists in the 8th Annual Coast Capital Savings Venture Prize competition. These finalists will present one last pitch, before we announce the winners for the competition.
The 2019 finalists are strong competitors who elevate the level of intensity in this year's contest, making the competition the fiercest one yet. To celebrate ventures both in the ideation stage and fully-operating businesses, these competitors are categorized into two streams: Idea Stream and Venture Stream.
Joining the Idea Stream Finalists is ARCtag, a transdisciplinary team composed of Ph.D. engineering students, designers, usability specialists, a health & ethics specialist, and a patient engagement & program evaluation specialist, looking to improve the outdoor recreation experience for seniors in Canada. The team hopes to develop the ARCtag, a low-cost, portable device for instant communication between people engaging in outdoor recreation activities.
Another Idea Stream Finalist developing solutions for seniors is Ruby Remote, an interdisciplinary team comprised of Simon Fraser University MSE and Beedie students from the Tech e@SFU program. These SFU students aim to provide automated entertainment and aromatherapy solutions for seniors, intended specifically for those with cognitive impairments.
A total of eight teams are competing for the Idea Prize Award - a $5,000 cash prize and entry into the Venture Connection incubator.
The Venture Stream Finalists, competitors who are further along in their business development, are contending for the Top Venture Prize award, a cash and in-kind prize package valued at over $35K, and additional category and attribute awards.
Among the Top 8 Venture Stream Finalists is Aplica! founded by FCAT Contemporary Arts grad student Luciana Saldanha Fortes and FASS International Studies grad student Vanessa Milost Gonzalez. Aplica! aims to help local and international high-school students looking to attend post-secondary school in Canada and the United States. Through personalized application consulting services as well as a web-based SaaS platform designed to compile key data about Canadian universities, they hope to streamline the university search and application process for prospective students.
For the next few weeks, these finalists will be meeting with Venture Prize mentors and prepping for their final presentation. Learn more about the finalists below!
