IPinCHer Tariq Zaman honoured for collaborative work on Penan sign language application

Tariq Zaman took home two awards at the International Conference on Human-Computer Interaction (INTERACT 2015) held in September in Bamberg, Germany. Tariq's research focuses on the community-based design of an innovative communication tool reviving a traditional sign language. This work is a collaboration with the Indigenous Penan community of Long Lamai.

At INTERACT 2015, Tariq presented a paper titled “Penan's Oroo's Short Message Signs: Co-design of a Digital Jungle Sign Language Application” (co-authored with Dr. Heike Winschiers-Theophilus, Polytecnic of Namibia).  

The paper won the prestigious Interaction Design for International Development Award, as well as the Brian Shackel Award recognizing an outstanding contribution with international impact in the field of human-computer interaction.  

Tariq is a Postdoctoral Research Fellow in the Institute of Social Informatics and Technological Innovation at Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS). He joined IPinCH as an Associate in early 2014.

Tariq earned his Ph.D. from the Faculty of Computer Science and Information Technology at UNIMAS. His research interests include Indigenous knowledge management (governance), Indigenous communities, rural information and communications technology, community informatics and information and communication technologies for development.
