Background

This large complex is one of the many standing ruins found in Rome. Built during the time of Emperor Trajan by his architect Appollodorus of Damascus, the structure was used as a multipurpose area with the market situated on the lower floors and the upper floors used as office spaces. This space not only shows a glimpse into the life of the ancient Romans but also displays their architectural prowess with the arches made of brick and concrete.

Our guide, Scott Schlimgen, is the Vice President of the American Institute of Roman Culture (AIRC) and conducted a number of tours for the Italia Design group back in 2006. With a master's degree in architecture from the Harvard University Graduate School of Design, Scott went to Rome in 1990 and practiced as an architect there for a few years. He then began teaching in 1991, and has been teaching American programs ever since. Scott travels back and forth between Italy and the US teaching and practicing.
