Troubleshooting Tips

"Help, something's wrong with my CQ Page... !"

We've got answers to your questions on many topics below. Don't see your issue?
You might find it in the list of known issues in CQ.

  • I can't see the image/file I uploaded in the Digital Asset Manager or Content Finder.
  • The Sidekick collapsed and I can't see the components anymore! How do maximize it?

  • A page that I have set up with Restricted Page Viewing is not viewable to the members of the maillist specified. What's wrong?

  • A page in my site needs a different name (URL), how do I change it?
  • I tried to put a column inside a column and it didn't go inside/it broke my page!
  • The banner image I put on my page doesn't sit flush with the navigation bar - it's shifted slightly to the right!
  • The links I put onto my page seem to work at first but end up broken later. Why?
  • I am placing my own HTML on my page using the HTML component, but it doesn't appear properly in author. What's wrong?
  • My referenced text isn't showing up in publishing! What's wrong?
  • I'm not receiving any form submissions from the Form Container component. Why?
  • I want a banner to cycle through different images to link to different pages (i.e., rotating news stories).
  • I want to add some buttons to my page for social media such as Twitter/Facebook, or printing/emailing. What component should I use?
  • I'd like to add a Twitter feed to my page, is there a component that can do this?
  • Is there a component that can do x/y/z functionality for me?
  • I've got a CQ problem and it's not addressed here on this page!

General Page Editing/Publishing

My published page looks different from what appears on author.sfu.ca. (e.g. images not displaying on published page)

Ensure that all content (pages as well as digital assets) have been activated (the symbols in the publish column of the WCM will be green for activated pages).

The Editing Window is frozen or has unexpected behaviour.

Try refreshing the browser window/tab. If the issue persists, close the Editing Window and re-launch it from the WCM.

My page is stuck in preview/edit mode and it won't switch when I click on the other mode.

Try refreshing the browser; sometimes certain edits need the page reloaded before you can continue working on the page, or to view it realistically in preview mode.

I can't see the image I uploaded in the Digital Asset Manager or Content Finder.

If you uploaded it directly to the page, you will not be able to find the image in the DAM. Re-upload your image directly to a folder in the DAM. When searching for it in the content finder, ensure that you are using the whole name, starting from the beginning, not just a part of the name (CQ does not search for partial names).

The Sidekick collapsed and I can't see the components anymore! How do maximize it?

If the Sidekick collapsed with the bottom corner buttons still visible, then put the mouse on the lower-right hand corner of the Sidekick and drag it to its expanded size. If the Sidekick has collapsed itself without the bottom corner buttons leaving just the title bar, click on the little arrow in the title bar to drop it down.

A minimized or collapsed sidekick can be expanded as shown above, to full size, as shown at right.

A page I've placed under restricted page viewing is not viewable to the members of the maillist I specified, what's wrong?

First ensure the page is activated properly. CQ needs 10 minutes to create the authentication groups in publisher. If you have not already, ensure that you have waited 10 minutes between inputting the maillist name, and activating the page.

If that fails to make RPV available to the group specified, ensure you are using the correct name of the maillist and that it exists (ie. all-employees is a valid, dynamically-generated maillist; all-faculty-staff is not).

A page in my site needs a different name (URL), how do I change it?

On the Page tab of the Sidekick, and in the menu bar of the WCM, there is a button labeled "Move..." that allows you to change the page name.

The reason this option is under "Move..." and not Page Properties (where page titles can be changed) is because the page name refers to the URL, or location. When changing the name of a page, you are not changing a property of the page, but rather you are moving it.

Component Problems

The banner image I put on my page doesn't sit flush with the navigation bar - it's shifted slightly to the right!

Add the phrase "fullwidth" to the image component's CSS class field. This will shift the image 18 pixels to the left, bypassing the padding automatically styled onto your page.

I tried to put a column inside a column and it didn't go inside, it broke my page!

CQ cannot display columns inside columns. If a column component is nested within a column component, authors can delete the extra column component. You may need to close and re-launch the Editing Window. If there is an existing version of the page (through activation or by manually saving the version), authors can also restore a past version and continue editing from there. Note, there may not necessarily be a version available to which the page can be reverted (i.e., if the page hasn't been activated).

The links I put onto my page seem to work at first but end up broken later. Why?

There are two common reasons this might happen. One reason is that links pulled from the Content Finder are currently not copying in properly. To work around this issue, use the Link field's own navigation menu to create links, and avoid using the Content Finder for linking.

03-Link

The other reason has to do with copying text with links from existing components. If an author puts in a link in a text component, and then decides to re-structure that text component (eg. splitting it into chunks), the entire component must be copied, and then edited separately.

If an author were to simply highlight a part of the text (in or out of the in-component editing) and then copy it (with keyboard shortcuts or the mouse) and paste it as text into a new text component, then the URL that appears in the new text component will appear as just the end parts of the pathway, missing the beginning.

To work around this, ensure that you are using CQ's dedicated right-click menu when you are copying (right-click, choose Copy). Once you have copied the entire text component, then paste a copy of the text component and remove text content as needed from the two. Always copy components as a whole, not just highlighted chunks.

I am placing my own HTML on my page using the HTML component, but it doesn't appear or run properly in author. What's wrong?

HTML appears as code, or otherwise non-functional, in Author. When the page is published, it should appear correctly on the live SFU site.

My referenced text isn't showing up in publishing! What's wrong?

When using the Reference Component to reference text (or images, etc.) on another page, ensure that both the source page for the referenced text and the page containing the Reference Component are activated before publishing your pages.

Learn more about using the Reference Component.

I'm not receiving any form submissions from the Form Container component. Why?

If the Form Container component is configured with the Mail To option, and you're not receiving any form submissions, check:

  • all email addresses are valid in the Mail To properties
  • there are no blank email fields

Any invalid emails in the Mail To properties will prevent the form data from being emailed. This includes blank email fields, like the ones in the image below.

Component Functionality

I want a banner to cycle through different images that link to different pages (e.g., rotating news stories).

The Carousel Component is used for rotating through a collection of images that link to other pages. Learn about the Carousel Component to display rotating images that link to separate pages. Here is a gallery of CQ sites, many of which are using Carousels as a feature.

I want to add some buttons to my page for social media such as Twitter/Facebook, or printing/emailing. What component should I use?

The Document Tools Component can combine social media with print/email functionality. Learn about the Document Tools Component to display buttons such as these:

I'd like to add a Twitter/Facebook feed to my page, is there a component that can do this?

An HTML component has been developed that authors can use to put custom HTML onto CQ pages. This will allow you to embed a Twitter feed or YouTube video to your site. For detailed instructions in how to embed a Twitter Feed or YouTube video to CQ pages, see Embedding a Twitter Feed or Embedding an External Video.

Is there a component that can do x/y/z functionality for me?

There are many different components with a wide variety of functionality, that will likely meet your needs. Browse our list of available CQ components, and if you cannot find any that do what you need, contact your site administrator who may look into meeting with the CMS team to develop a solution.
