Network Services operates the telephone service on all three campuses. Telephones come in either conventional (TDM) technology or voice-over-IP (VoIP). VoIP technology, which uses the Internet to carry telephone traffic, links all three campuses, with redundant links using the traditional public-switched telephone network (PSTN) as backup for automatic failover.
Softphones, which are applications that run on your computer, tablet or smartphone and provide VoIP service with or without a headset, are becoming increasingly popular. SFU faculty and staff can purchase a software phone called SFU Softphone Client which comes along with a DID (direct inward dialing) number.
The old softphone, Bria Stretto, is in the process of getting decommissioned.
