Katie Gravestock is a PhD Candidate in Human Geography at Simon Fraser University. She holds a Master's Degree in Political Science from the University of Victoria and a Bachelor's Degree in Political Science with a Minor in Labour Studies from Simon Fraser University. Her Master's research examines the second-hand clothing industry in Canada and second-hand clothing commodity chains through an investigation of the impacts of fast fashion and what happens to unsold clothing at thrift stores in Victoria, Canada. Katie's PhD research explores the relationship between fashion retail workers, clothing consumption practices, and urban change. In particular, she is interested in the relationship between gendered forms of labour, precarity, and the promotion of gentrified retail landscapes.
Katie is an active union member of the Teaching Support Staff Union and was involved in the campaign to unionize Research Assistants at SFU. For the last two years, she has worked as a Chief Steward for the Teaching Support Staff Union (TSSU) where she was the Chair of the Bargaining Committee.
