The Living Wage for Families Campaign is hiring a Research Coordinator for a three-year participatory action research project on the impacts of low wages on individuals and families.

This research aims to examine community impacts of low wage work to provide a better understanding to policymakers of possible policy responses.

Position Summary:

The Research Coordinator is responsible for coordinating and overseeing all research activities of the project, including training research assistants, assisting with data collection, and providing organizational support. The Research Coordinator will work with an advisory committee made up of representatives of community organizations, labour and academia.

The successful candidate will recruit and train a cohort of low wage workers to build capacity for policy advocacy among individuals impacted by low wage work. The workers will receive training about research methods, outreach, organizing, and civic engagement, preparing them to participate in advocacy to influence decision makers to take action on the policy recommendations.

This is a part-time role at 3 days (21 hours) per week, for the duration of the three-year project. This position is located at the First Call: BC Child and Youth Advocacy Coalition office in Vancouver.

Duties and Responsibilities:

• Plans and coordinates the initiation of the research study, including developing the terms of reference for the advisory committee and research cohort and procedures for decision making.
• Coordinates the creation and continuation of a multi-year learning cohort of low wage workers, and facilitates capacity building and training in research methods and policy advocacy.
• Assumes responsibilities and tasks related to the undertaking of community-based action-oriented research, including – but not limited to – compiling background research, assisting in research design, gathering and analyzing data, and fulfilling project reporting obligations.
• Organizes and maintains data and other research-related files.
• Plans and coordinates regular advisory committee meetings.
• Ensures that research projects adhere to ethical guidelines and anti-oppressive practices.
• Works collaboratively with the Living Wage for Families Campaign Organizer and the project advisory committee.

Education, Training and Competencies:

• Post secondary degree in a related field or equivalent combination of education and experience
• Experience in participatory action research and community research-based principles
• Demonstrated understanding of the complexity of issues relating to the impacts of low wage work on individuals and families
• Demonstrated ability to connect with and/or mobilize individuals engaged in low wage and precarious work
• Demonstrated program coordination and volunteer management skills
• Excellent facilitation skills
• Fluency in English, ability to speak another language is an asset
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
• Computer competency including proficiency in Microsoft Office and social media
