We lead community-centred climate innovation. As climate change intensifies, impacts will be felt and changes can be made at the community level. Our unique approach to this is community-centred climate innovation, founded on community partnerships, innovation and a deep commitment to Indigenous knowledges and perspectives.
We diversify energy systems. Our sustainable energy engineering researchers pursue highly collaborative, interdisciplinary initiatives to develop innovative solutions to some of the most pressing challenges that society faces in the harvesting, storage, transmission and use of energy.
We support the transition to a zero-emission economy. SFU’s Renewable Cities program will establish a new regional Low Carbon Cities Canada (LC3) Innovation Centre, aimed at accelerating urban climate solutions for the region.
Our alumni advance renewable energy solutions. SFU alumni-founded Moment Energy and Ionomr are cleantech companies with award-winning products recognized for their impact in the renewable energy sector.
We care about the places and lands that sustain us. Professor of Indigenous Business Dara Kelly leads research on the concept of Indigenous wellbeing and quality of life. Respecting Indigenous knowledges, re-connecting to lands and territories and focusing on community-informed climate innovation is key to building a more sustainable world for future generations.
We support green transportation. SFU’s Sustainable Transportation Action Team analyzes and advances low-impact transportation solutions.
We help communities fight climate change. The ACT - Action on Climate Team is a state-of-the-art research-to-practice hub for the mobilization of climate change and sustainability knowledge and solutions. ACT works across sectors to mobilize relevant knowledge for practice.
We innovate to fight climate change. Sustainable engineering professor Sami Khan develops efficient systems to capture and convert carbon dioxide emissions.
We innovate in agritech. We empower B.C.'s agritech businesses to grow the economy and feed the world by accelerating research and development of new food production and processing technologies.
We train the next generation of cleantech engineers. Students at SFU’s School of Sustainable Energy Engineering learn to become global leaders in cleantech.
We expand green power. The Hybrid Thermal Electric Microgrid project trains students to design the next generation of green power energy grids.
We test climate solutions. SFU researchers at the Civic Innovation Lab turn our communities into testing grounds for sustainable solutions to combat climate change.
We build healthier cities. Health sciences professor Meghan Winters designs green transportation solutions to build healthier cities and communities.
We help build sustainable and just cities. Professor Andréanne Doyon has studied cities around the world, fueling her passion for sustainable and just urban planning.

We help the world fight climate change. Professor Taco Niet works with governments around the globe helping build capacity and expertise in the fight against climate change.
We’re cleantech trailblazers. SFU won the Top Education Institute Award and the Top Scholar Award at 2021’s BC Cleantech awards.
We advance cleantech solutions. Canada Research Chair Majid Bahrami develops sustainable energy projects. His research team won the 2016 Canada Clean50 Award.
We empower people to fight climate change. In The Citizen’s Guide to Climate Success, professor Mark Jaccard shows us how we can all reduce our emissions and support a green energy transition.
We power clean energy. Canada Research Chair Erik Kjeang heads SFU’s Fuel Cell Research Laboratory where he works with Ballard Power Systems on fuel-cell-powered buses.
We’re climate change experts. Four SFU climate change experts joined the Canadian Institute for Climate Choices to help tackle Canada’s climate challenges.
We assess strategies and actions to address the climate crisis. Geography professor Kirsten Zickfeld models climate-mitigation efforts to determine whether they are on track to meet climate targets.
We help decolonize planetary health to benefit human health. Resource and environmental management professor Clifford Atleo advocates for an anti-colonial, anti-racist, reciprocal approach to addressing climate change and global health inequities in order to benefit human health.
We pioneer innovative research-to-practice approaches to climate change. Climate change and sustainability scholar and practitioner Alison Shaw works to find innovative solutions to climate change while advancing equity, biodiversity and other social, environmental and economic objectives.
