From Catherine Dauvergne & Sandi de Domenico | Additional supports available for faculty and staff

December 16, 2020

This message is sent on behalf of Catherine Dauvergne, provost and vice-president, academic and Sandi de Domenico, associate vice-president, human resources. It has been sent to all faculty and staff.

Dear faculty and staff,

The past few days have been difficult. The event that occurred in our Burnaby campus dining hall on December 11 has been upsetting and may affect individuals who are Black, Indigenous or People of Colour more acutely.

We acknowledge how much work there is to do to address systemic oppression in all forms, including racism and colonialism, and are committed to taking up this work alongside you. In the interim however, we recognize the immediate challenges some of our community are facing regarding the incident.

This is a reminder that faculty and continuing and temporary staff always have access to 24/7 mental health support through our Employee Family Assistance Program provider Homewood Health: https://homewoodhealth.com/individuals/services/efap. However, in order to provide further support we have arranged with Homewood Health’s Crisis Management Team for additional sessions over the next several days with a specialized counsellor who has intercultural and trauma-informed experience.

Beginning today, sessions can be booked directly and confidentially though Homewood.

To access individual support, call 1-877-632-3165 between 5 a.m. and 4 p.m. PST, select option 1 for English followed by option 4 for the Crisis Management Team. Identify that you are calling from SFU and/or request to book a 30 minutes time slot with Anne. You are encouraged to pre-book a session to avoid wait times.

You can also join a Zoom meeting without calling into the number listed above to wait for an open time to be admitted into the Zoom session.
