From Keith Fong | Microsoft Teams and OneDrive now available to SFU faculty and staff

October 18, 2021

This message is sent on behalf of Keith Fong, interim Chief Information Officer of Simon Fraser University. It has been sent to all staff and faculty.

I am pleased to announce that Microsoft Teams (MS Teams) and OneDrive are now available at SFU. These online collaboration apps provide spaces for digital teamwork by stitching together Microsoft products, such as Word or Excel, with Microsoft’s 365 cloud platform. Our long-term goal with Microsoft 365 is to create a more direct path for virtual teamwork and consolidate the number of daily apps you use.

What is Microsoft Teams?

Microsoft Teams is a virtual collaboration app, combining online chat, video conferencing, and file-sharing/storage to create digital connections across the university. It also connects to Office 365, such as Word or Excel, to simplify document editing and streamline online work.

Microsoft Teams is available to faculty, staff, and graduate students, and we will configure the app for enhanced learning and invite undergraduate students in the future.

What is OneDrive?

OneDrive is a modern file-sharing and storage platform that will meet the growing needs of file collaboration at SFU. It’s like SFU Vault but provides 1TB online storage and connects to Office 365 productivity apps for easy editing and file control.

OneDrive is available to all faculty, staff, and students at SFU.

What’s next?

Over the past year, we have ensured Microsoft 365 is ready for use at SFU and meets University standards. Over the next few years, we will start to introduce more Microsoft 365 services, which includes enhancing SFU Email with Exchange Online and launching SharePoint Online as a service.
