President Johnson's Message in Celebration of Black History Month

un/settled Art Installation Embodies Belzberg Library

The un/settled art installation, by poet and 2021 Shadbolt fellow Otoniya Okot Bitek and award-winning writer and artist and SFU lecturer Chantal Gibson, drapes Black womanhood over 240 square feet of SFU Vancouver's Belzberg Library's streetfront windows. Ebony Magnus, head of the Belzberg Library says the installation, "Is a resistance, it's a response, it's about monumental and unapologetic Black life."

dan laitsch believes in an unconventional approach to academic integrity

Dan Laitsch, an associate professor with the Department of English and the founding director of the Centre for the Study of Educational Leadership and Policy, believes taking a non-comparative approach is the key to encouraging academic integrity in students. Reminder to claim your home office expenses this tax season

SFU employees who worked from home during 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic are eligible to claim home office expenses on their 2020 income tax filing. Under the CRA’s new administrative policy for 2020, the taxpayer may claim home office expenses using one of two claim methods, simplified or detailed. The simplified method does not require any extra forms or copies of receipts. The detailed method requires completion of the T2200S form (to be issued in February) and copies of receipts. Employees claiming home office expenses will also be required to complete Form T777S under both the simplified method and detailed method. Additional information is available on the Finance/Payroll websites, along with a calculation tool to assist employees with determining their allowable deductions for home office expenses.

Call for 2021 Sterling Prize in Support of Controversy nominations has been extended

The Nora and Ted Sterling Prize in Support of Controversy looks for candidates who are doing work that challenges complacency. The prize is awarded annually for work that presents new ways of looking at the world that are daring and creative. Deadline for nominations has been extended to March 15, 2021.

Join us for a special edition of the faculty smackdown debate

SFU students have nominated faculty members to participate in a special edition of a fun, light-hearted debate to raise money for the United Way of the Lower Mainland. Sixteen professors, with the help of a moderator, will debate topics of a nonsensical nature to vie for the Gnome-It-All Award. All proceeds will go to the United Way.
