SFU RESEARCHERS ENCOURAGE COMMUNITY MEMBERS TO GET VACCINATED

SFU's Back On Campus Advisory Group, made of experts in virology, infectious diseases, mathematical modeling and more, are providing evidence-based recommendations to support return-to-campus planning, including that community members get vaccinated for COVID-19. The group addresses common themes related to these new vaccines such as safety, effectiveness and the risk of opting out.

HOW TWO SFU PODCASTERS ARE MAKING PEER-REVIEWED WORK MORE ACCESSIBLE

Motivated to break down the barriers of access, SFU scholarly podcasters Hannah McGregor and Stacey Copeland discuss redefining peer-reviewed research and reaching new audiences through podcasting.

 

SFU RESEARCHER RECEIVES AWARDED FOR DATA PREPARATION TOOLS

SFU's Jiannan Wang has been awarded a 2020 Outstanding Early Career Researcher Award for his work surrounding data preparation, including collecting, exploring, cleaning, transforming and integrating data. Wang says that while much work has been done already, research is a marathon.

 

The Learning Experiences Transition Survey, held from February 24 to March 10, gathered over 6,000 responses from SFU undergraduate students. The survey found that a majority of students, both locally and internationally, prefer a mix of synchrnous and asynchronous classes as we transition to on campus education.

Navigating a 3D virtual environment involves keeping oriented while efficiently traversing large and varied landscapes — all without introducing motion sickness. Researchers at SFU’s School of Interactive Arts and Technology are working to address these unique challenges to deliver a more authentic and efficient 3D virtual reality experience.

 

OPERATIONAL UPDATES

Limited space remains. The application deadline has been extended to end of business day April 12. Learn how to amplify your voice & share your research with media. The Emerging Thought Leaders program, an online series that helps faculty learn how to position their research and knowledge to be covered in op-eds and media commentary, will run throughout May. To increase diversity in media spokespeople, preference will be given to people who identify as women, transgender and gender non-conforming or those from under-represented groups, including Black, Indigenous and people of colour.

$120,000 is available in grants of up to $10,000 for faculty and staff projects developed with community partners that strengthen relationships and catalyze meaningful impact. Up to 50% of the funding is dedicated to supporting projects that strengthen community resilience in the face of the COVID-19 pandemic. Deadline to submit is April 16, 2021.

As B.C. universities prepare for September’s full resumption of on-campus education, SFU is hosting a townhall for staff and faculty to answer questions and solicit employee feedback to help guide the return for all faculty, staff and students. The livestreamed townhall will be held April 13, 2021. Staff and faculty are encouraged to submit any questions ahead of time.
