SFU HEALTH EXPERT DISCUSSES VACCINE HESITANCY

Vaccination is the single most important thing each of us can to do protect ourselves and others.

Hear from Scott Lear, SFU Faculty of Health Sciences professor, about vaccine hesitancy, the implications of contracting COVID-19 and advice for those still on the fence.

This fall, we want to create an inviting and supportive environment for our new community members. We are looking for volunteers to greet, provide wayfinding and answer questions.

Volunteer opportunities:

  • Residence and Housing Move-In Day on September 4 (1-hr shifts, 8am to 4pm)
  • Student Welcome Day on September 7 (9:30am to 11:30am)
  • Ask Me Program (September 7 to 17)

Thanks to the staff and faculty who have been attending our lunchtime event series, Lunch, Discover + Connect.

Wondering what the new Student Union Building looks like inside? On Wednesday, August 25 from 11:30am to 2:00pm, take a tour of the new student space. Bring your lunch, reconnect with colleagues and explore this exciting addition to campus.

UNIVERSITY NEWS

MEET THE DUO SUPPORTING THE FACULTY OF HEALTH SCIENCES' RESEARCH COMMUNITY

SFU Faculty of Health Sciences' Cecilia Kalaw and Katrina Salvante have been keeping busy this year, coordinating and submitting research grant applications. In 2020, they submitted a record-breaking 132 research grant applications, resulting in $10M to date in new research funding.

In this instalment of People of SFU, learn more about Kalaw and Salvante's partnership, commitment to research and what they feel is the best part of supporting this work.

CO2 REMOVALS ARE NOT EQUAL TO CO2 EMISSIONS

“The climate effects of CO2 in do not equal the effects of CO2 out,” says SFU Distinguished Professor of Climate Science Kirsten Zickfeld. Her research on climate change shows that assuming a “symmetrical” outcome could risk blowing climate targets.

Faculty of Health Sciences professor Meghan Winters is excited that the Distinguished SFU Professor program will support time, space and funding to engage wider audiences in her research. “This will allow me to bring in more students from health sciences, urban studies, geography from across the university.”

Since taking a science class in his hometown of Lagos, Nigeria, Emmanuel Balogun's been drawn to helping others by providing a sustainable substitute for fossil fuels. Today, he is part of SFU's Faculty of Science, studying fuel cell enhancement. For his commitment to finding sustainable solutions, he has been awarded the 2021 Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarship.
