SFU RANKS HIGH AMONG TOP GLOBAL UNIVERSITIES FOR REAL-WORLD IMPACT

This year the World’s Universities with Real Impact (WURI) rankings placed SFU third globally for its entrepreneurial spirit and 24th overall among innovative universities — the highest-placing university in Canada and the only one to crack the top 100. 

“I'm so pleased to see SFU continue to rise up the WURI rankings, reinforcing our mission to be Canada’s engaged university and recognizing that our efforts are having a real impact on society,” says SFU President Joy Johnson.

 

MEET THE NEW DEAN OF SFU BEEDIE

Professor Ujwal Kayande has been named as the new dean of SFU’s Beedie School of Business. Kayande is currently an associate dean and professor of marketing at the Melbourne Business School in Australia and he will join SFU in mid-January 2022.

 

The Quantum Algorithms Institute at Simon Fraser University’s Surrey campus will benefit from $2.2 million in federal funding from Western Economic Diversification Canada. The support will help accelerate the innovation and commercialization of quantum technologies.

Last spring, Ruth Appanah was tasked with shutting down almost all Faculty of Science research, teaching and administrative spaces while ensuring that a handful of critical labs could still operate under strict provincial and university guidelines. Learn more about Appanah's role and how her work to keep the faculty running smoothly during the pandemic has earned her an SFU Staff Achievement Award.

 

RESOURCES + OPERATIONAL UPDATES

PROVIDE INPUT FOR SFU'S NEW PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM SUPPORTING RECONCILIATION

In response to one of the calls to action in the SFU-ARC Walk This Path With Us report, work is currently underway on the RESPECT Project. The project aims to create a professional development program at SFU that will cover topics including reconcili-action, decolonization, anti-Indigenous racism and Indigenization.

In a recent email, all SFU employees were invited to provide feedback that will help guide the design of this program. Don’t miss this opportunity to share your thoughts — the survey closes on July 31.

 

NOMINATE A COLLEAGUE FOR THEIR SUSTAINABILITY EFFORTS

SFU International is pleased to announce the sixth call for nominations for the Chris Dagg Award for Impact in International Sustainable Development. The award celebrates the achievements of a staff or faculty member who has made a significant contribution to global sustainability on behalf of SFU. Deadline is September 17, 2021.

INCREASING INCLUSION AT SFU

On Wednesday, August 11, all LGBTQ2+ members of the SFU community are invited to a virtual forum hosted by President Joy Johnson and J.S. Woodsworth Resident Scholar Svend Robinson.

This event will be a place for LGBTQ2+ community members to meet with each other and discuss ways of increasing inclusion at SFU.
