WELCOME HOME: SFU EXPANDS STUDENT HOUSING WITH TWO NEW BUILDINGS

This week, SFU celebrates the opening of two new student housing buildings at the Burnaby campus. These modern spaces include 482 single-occupancy rooms as well as community kitchens, wellness, music and activity rooms, multi-faith spaces and a learning commons. The buildings will expand housing options for students and make life on Burnaby campus even more vibrant.

EMBRACING THE POWER OF STORYTELLING

As the program manager for SFU Public Square, Seth Erais supports event planning, volunteer coordination and much more. But at the heart of it all, Seth is driven by a desire to help other people tell their stories. In the latest installment of our People of SFU series, we return the favour.

Need info you can bank on? Economics professor Luba Petersen and Bank of Canada economist Oleksiy Kryvtsov suggest that central banks can improve public trust, expectations and comprehension by communicating with simple, relatable language.

OPERATIONAL UPDATES

SHARE YOUR IDEAS FOR VIBRANCY ON BURNABY MOUNTAIN

SFU Ancillary Services is engaging with Burnaby campus faculty, staff, students and the UniverCity community to create a vision for community vibrancy on Burnaby Mountain. With your input, a plan is being created to ensure our community is a welcoming, inspiring and animated place where everyone feels a sense of belonging. Visit the Community Vibrancy page to learn more about the project, attend an upcoming workshop or submit your ideas online.

SUPPORTING STUDENTS IN DISTRESS

Health & Counselling offers the Support Over Suicide & Students in Distress workshop to all SFU faculty and staff. Participants will learn how to ask about suicidal thoughts and respond to students in distress using effective interpersonal skills. The workshop also guides participants in connecting students with SFU resources and community-based services.

INTERESTED IN PURSUING A GRADUATE EDUCATION IN BUSINESS?

SFU Beedie invites you to check out these two program offerings that are suitable for employees.

Consider building a solid business foundation with the Management of Technology MBA (MOT MBA), a part-time program taking place two evenings per week with a business curriculum tailored to technology professionals. Connect with Somi Benning (somi_benning@sfu.ca) to discuss the program and your eligibility.

The SFU Beedie Graduate Diploma in Business Administration (GDBA) is a competitive credential that offers the rigour of MBA-level courses with greater flexibility. It is delivered 100% online, on a part-time basis, and doesn't require a GMAT score. Contact Giovanni Scoppetta (gio_scoppetta@sfu.ca) to learn more.

As part of SFU's return to campus preparation, the university will conduct a COVID-19 rapid screening pilot project with the goal of keeping our community healthy. Students living in SFU Burnaby on-campus housing and selected athletes have been invited to sign up for the voluntary rapid antigen screening in the pilot that will launch on June 8 and run until July 30th, 2021. This screening is available for those who are not experiencing symptoms related to COVID-19, and does not replace any SFU worksafe plans.

FEATURE EVENT

June 7 & 9 | Hosted by SFU Human Resources

LEADING FROM THE INTERSECTIONS

Intersectionality is a way to understand how power and privilege impact the lives of people with diverse identities. To be better leaders, we need to ask critical questions like: How does understanding our own intersectional identity help us be more inclusive leaders? What are some best practices for working inclusively at the intersections of race, class, gender, sexuality, age and (dis)ability?

This workshop will explore how we can use an intersectional approach to understand our frame of reference, how these may differ from others and tips for becoming more culturally safe and responsive.

June 9 | Hosted by Pride at Work Canada

CREATING SPACES OF BELONGING

This virtual panel conversation will look at how we can move from discussions about inclusion to creating a sense of belonging in our workplaces. With business and community leaders at the table, attendees will learn how to create spaces where LGBTQ2+ employees are actively celebrated.
