JOY JOHNSON SHARES WHAT'S HAPPENING ON BURNABY CAMPUS

In Joy's latest video message she takes us on a tour of her favourite Burnaby campus spots, including a coffee at Renaissance, a check-in at Student Central and visit to the Library. CAIT McKINNEY AWARDED 'BEST BOOK OF THE YEAR'

Cait McKinney, assistant professor in the School of Communication received the 2021 Gertrude J. Robinson Award "Best Book of the Year". This is in recognition of the book Information Activism: A Queer History of Lesbian Media Technologies which explores sexuality studies, media history and how access to information and media technologies brought people together to organize and build social justice movements.

 

EXECUTIVE MBA STUDENT OVERCOMES NEAR-FATAL ACCIDENT AND COMPLETES DEGREE

Erik Brinkman survived a four-storey fall on his honeymoon that left him with serious injuries. After 16 surgeries and a year recovering, he is receiving an Executive MBA from SFU Beedie later this month.

SFU PHYSICIST NAMED ONE OF YWCA'S 2021 WOMEN OF DISTINCTION

Stephanie Simmons has been awarded the 2021 YWCA Metro Vancouver Women of Distinction Award in Research, Sciences and Technology. Simmons is an assistant professor in SFU's Physics Department, CIFAR Research Fellow and a Canada Research Chair in Quantum Nanoelectronics. The award honours individuals and organizations whose actions and accomplishments have made a lifelong impact on the well-being of the Metro Vancouver community.

SFU stands in solidarity with Muslim communities in B.C. and across Canada in the wake of last Sunday's heartbreaking Islamophobic attack in London, Ontario. Muslim members of our community may be struggling with grief and pain, and many others may be wondering how to help. You're invited to tune in and hear SFU Health Sciences' Kelley Lee, who will share Canada’s border management policies during COVID-19 and why shortcomings must be addressed before gradually lifting restrictions. Spotlighting a risk-based approach, Lee will address how this method better protects public health and restores confidence in travel post-pandemic.

Join the conversation with writer and scholar Billy-Ray Belcourt from the Driftpile Cree Nation in northwestern Alberta. 

He will be accompanied by Nisga'a writer Jordan Abel as he shares his experiences as a graduate student and reads from his work. The discussion and Q&A will be moderated by SFU Department of English PhD candidate Mackenzie Ground, a nehiyawiskwew and a writer from Enoch Cree Nation and Edmonton, Alberta, Treaty Six.
