BRINGING THE SCARBOROUGH CHARTER TO LIFE

Last year, SFU was one of more than 40 Canadian post-secondary institutions that signed onto the Scarborough Charter on Anti-Black Racism and Black Inclusion in Canadian Higher Education. Adjua Akinwumi and Henry Daniel, members of the SFU Black Caucus, will both moderate panels at the upcoming symposium, Community Making and Black Flourishing Through the Scarborough Charter, where administrators, faculty, advisors, students and community activists will discuss pathways for action on the Charter’s commitments. Read perspectives from Akinwumi and Daniel in the lead-up to the symposium.

PSYCHEDELICS AS THERAPIES TO REDUCE

OPIOID USE

SFU researchers Kora DeBeck (Public Policy) and Kanna Hayashi (Health Sciences) have found psychedelic use to be associated with reduced daily opioid use in a first-of-its-kind Canadian study. Their interdisciplinary research adds to growing knowledge and interest in psychedelics as a potential therapy for substance use disorders.

Research that examines how the body adapts to new movements is shedding new light on how the nervous system learns, and could help to inform a wide range of applications, from customized rehabilitation and athletic training to wearable systems for healthcare.
