ADVANCEMENTS IN CELL STUDY DRIVEN BY ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE

Researchers identified the need to improve the resolution of super-resolution microscopy that can’t show tiny distances between organelles in cells. This gap is where artificial intelligence (AI) and biomedical computer vision intersect, as researchers from SFU Computing Science and UBC School of Biomedical Engineering and Life Sciences Institute reveal how AI enhances the capabilities and contributes to cellular biology advancements. This breakthrough explains mechanisms underlying complex diseases such as neurodegenerative and metabolic disorders.

 

DOING GOOD: ALUMNI ACHIEVEMENTS

Inspired to make a difference in the world, starting in their youth and time studying at SFU, these three individuals are examples of the meaningful impact being made by our graduates.

Erika De Torres is the Director of Impact and Development at Apathy is Boring, an organization co-founded to reverse the country’s trend of declining voter participation. Torres remembers understanding the difference she wanted to make in the world when she was 12 years old.

In Rian Bevan’s first years at the university, he knew he wanted to study something that would help him do good. Bevan is the Lead Innovation Researcher at Four the Future, an Indigenous-owned company that develops business and economic development models grounded in traditional ways of knowing.

Director of Volunteer Engagement and Innovation at Crohn’s and Colitis Canada, Jessica Pang-Parks shares, “I’m most proud of the moments in my career when I can make those meaningful connections.”

 

SFU SCHOLAR NAMED AMONG TOP TEN MOST INFLUENTIAL HISPANIC CANADIANS

Every year, the Tele Latino Network recognizes Latin Americans in Canada making significant impact in their professions and the diverse communities that they serve. Sociology and labour studies assistant professor Evelyn Encalada Grez was selected for her long trajectory of advocacy and research for the rights of migrant farm workers and inclusion of immigrants in Canada.

 

FACULTY OF ARTS AND SOCIAL SCIENCES FELLOW RECEIVES PRESTIGIOUS AWARD

Germaine Koh's work will be exhibited at the National Gallery of Canada until March 3, 2024. In Koh's interview, she discusses her projects over the years, her artistic process and the philosophy behind her creations.

As the university nears the holiday closure, the last 2023 edition of the What's On Newsletter will be published on Tuesday, December 19. Submission deadline is 12:00 noon on Friday, December 15.

Since 1992, the university has helped raise more than $3.5 million towards programs that have positively impacted local vulnerable communities. This new volunteer role supports the event leads at all three campuses in the planning and execution of fundraising events, coordination with the United Way and liaison with key stakeholders. Encourage students to participate in the university-wide interdisciplinary event that provides them with the opportunity to gain academic conference experience in a supportive environment. Student researchers can work closely with their supervisors on their proposals and presentations.

  • Presented their work at SFU faculty or department-sponsored research symposia
  • Participate in supervised research at SFU
