AWARDEES SHARE PASSION TO ADDRESS GLOBAL CHALLENGES

School of Sustainable Energy Engineering professor Zafar Adeel and

SFU International executive director Shaheen Nanji are the 2023 recipients of the Chris Dagg Impact in International Sustainable Development award. The award recognizes and celebrates the achievements of SFU staff or faculty members who have made substantial contributions over many years to international sustainable development on behalf of the university. 

 

TESTING FATE: AI AND HIGHER EDUCATION

Education professor Tenzin Doleck and postdoctoral fellow Bahar Memarian studied the application of Fairness, Accountability, Transparency and Ethics (FATE) in the use of artificial intelligence in higher education. They encourage users to carefully consider why and how it is used in order to protect academic integrity.

 

CREATING INCLUSIVE SPACES FOR ELEMENTARY SCHOOL STUDENTS

Education alumnus Kristina Carley was recently awarded the 2023 Premier’s Award for Excellence in Education in the social, equity and diversity category. This award recognizes Carley's transformative work, which includes the creation of a diversity club and rainbow crosswalk that foster diversity and equity within the school community.

 
 

RESOURCES + OPERATIONAL UPDATES

SUPPORT SFU'S ANNUAL UNITED WAY CAMPAIGN

Since 1992, the university has helped to raise more than $3.6 million for programs with a positive social impact in local communities during an unprecedented year. Information about the book sales at all three campuses will be announced in January. Last year, the United Way:

  • Provided 3.35 million meals and hampers to families and individuals in need through local United Way Food Hubs
  • Helped 6,755 local kids attend high-quality, out-of-school programs
  • Connected 9,000 residents to their communities through 148 Local Love-funded projects
 

This award honours an SFU student, staff, academic or community member challenging complacency. The selected recipient provokes a wide audience through their unconventional and untraditional work. The awardee will receive $5,000 and an opportunity to publicly present their work. Submit nominations by February 15, 2024.

  • Seasonal: Holiday/winter initiatives and human-interest stories, look ahead/predictions for important societal and science themes for 2024 and recent research updates, winter sports/activities and dangers, holiday travel, COVID/flu and COVID misinformation, extreme weather watch, wildlife interactions
  • International: World conflicts and protests, AI effects on workforce/economy/privacy
  • National: Inflation, interest rate announcement (Dec 7), SOGI, international relations, cost of living and food insecurity, real estate, Canadian news/Bill C-18
  • Local: Emissions reduction targets and economy, housing density around transit, rental scams, housing initiatives, Surrey policing, overcrowded schools, surge of discrimination, population overdue for their COVID shots, toxic drugs and psychedelics, labour shortages

REMEMBERING AND HONOURING VICTIMS

December 6 | Hosted by Sexual Violence Support & Prevention Office

Next Wednesday marks the anniversary of the massacre of 14 young women at Polytechnique Montréal. The SFU community is invited to attend an in-person memorial co-hosted by the SVSPO, SFU Women in Engineering and other campus partners and take action against gender-based violence. This event will be held in the Burnaby campus' Student Union Building ballroom.
