BARGAINING UPDATES

PICKETS ANNOUNCED AT ADDITIONAL CAMPUS LOCATIONS

The Teaching Support Staff Union (TSSU) continues to hold an indefinite teaching work stoppage at all campus locations and has announced plans to picket additional campus locations this week:

  • October 18: Burnaby and Surrey campuses
  • October 19: Burnaby and Vancouver campuses
  • October 20: Burnaby, Surrey and Vancouver campuses

Future dates and times for picketing will be shared with the community as soon as the university is notified of them. The university continues to ask TSSU to pause the work stoppage and picket lines while the parties work towards an agreement through mediation and make progress toward a negotiated settlement.

SAFETY ON CAMPUS DURING STRIKE ACTION

The university is aware that recent strike action by Teaching Support Staff Union (TSSU) members and supporters has caused significant concern over the last week. To date, the university has received over 100 formal strike incident complaints from faculty, staff, students and contractors. Faculty, staff, students and their families have asked the university to respond to and prevent this behaviour from continuing.

The university has brought these complaints forward to TSSU leadership on multiple occasions and is logging reports of this disruptive strike activity while assessing options for further action.

Please see here for the options available to you if you witness or have been affected by illegal strike action.

RESOURCES + OPERATIONAL UPDATES

SUSTAINABILITY IN ADVANCEMENT AND ALUMNI ENGAGEMENT

Throughout the year, SFU will highlight each of the six goals in the 2022-2025 Strategic Sustainability and Climate Action Plan. This month, the spotlight is on sustainable practices embedded in advancement and alumni engagement, from pursuing fundraising initiatives that support sustainability to reducing operational carbon footprint.

In alignment with cybersecurity month, the university has launched a new online course to highlight the importance of information security. All university community members are required to take this 20-30 minute course to help maintain a safe campus and protect assets critical to work. Complete the course that highlights the importance of information security and supports the new policies under GP 24. Employees and faculty members are SFU’s first line of defence against the risk of fraud, scams, or breaches.

Learn how to be prepared in the event of an earthquake on campus. This year’s drill will take place on October 19 at 10:20 a.m. To participate, download the SFU Snap application and enable push notifications to receive alerts on the safety procedures to follow. Alerts will also be displayed on digital screens and across SFU-managed computers.

More road work is expected this week on University Crescent between Highland Court and University High Street. Please follow directional signage and safety personnel during temporary times of single-lane traffic or sidewalk detours.
