BRINGING A STAFF PERSPECTIVE TO UNIVERSITY GOVERNANCE

During her two decades at SFU, Hanna has worn many hats. Now her volunteer role on the Board of Governors gives her the opportunity to see the university in a bigger picture while giving back to her community.

 

Beedie School of Business is pleased to announce the winners of the 2023 TD Canada Trust Distinguished Teaching Awards, Andrew Harries and Joey Lam. The award recognizes educators for their contributions and exceptional teaching.

Tamara O'Doherty, a senior criminology lecturer, was honoured with the Cormack Teaching Award this year for her exceptional instructional skills, her relentless focus on teaching pedagogy and her remarkable dedication to her students.
 

PROTECTING MARINE WILDLIFE

A partnership between SFU’s School of Environmental Science and the QENTOL, YEN (W̱SÁNEĆ Marine Guardians) is playing a vital role in supporting research and conservation efforts for killer whales. A team of researchers, led by Ruth Joy, is developing statistical models to further support this cause.

 
 

RESOURCES + OPERATIONAL UPDATES

Attend the virtual 2024/25 information session on November 1 from 2:15 to 3:15 p.m. to learn more about SFU's budget and budget process. This session will help faculty and staff understand SFU’s current financial situation so they can engage with their departments and units more fully as they develop the 2024-2025 budget. The Sexual Violence Support & Prevention Office is inviting the SFU community to host events or activities that support the 2024 theme, Masculinities for Humanity. Sharing expertise through media, social media and online platforms or leveraging strategic communications is recognized annually with the SFU Newsmaker Awards. The call for nominations is open until November 17.

ANNUAL SHAKE OUT BC DRILL 2023 COMPLETE

On October 19, a province-wide event helped B.C. residents know the exact procedures to follow in an earthquake. It served as an opportunity for everyone to be alert, knowledgeable about what they should do and prepared should an emergency arise.

The event was also an opportunity for SFU to test a new emergency communications system that sends a single emergency message across its various alert channels. The test was largely a success but a few formatting errors (characters, spacing and font size) were noticed in the alert messaging and are being addressed. Another emergency test is being planned for later this fall or winter.

SALISH SINGING AND DRUMMING WORKSHOP

October 25 | Hosted by Vancity Office of Community Engagement

Russell Wallace, a composer, producer and traditional Lil’wat singer is hosting a free workshop. SFU community members are invited to participate and try Salish singing and drumming. A limited supply of drums will be available and guests are encouraged to bring their own drum if they have one.

 

October 26 | Hosted by The Walrus

Attend in-person or virtually to learn about possible solutions to the current state of housing in Canada. SFU community members can obtain free tickets to the event. Seven leaders will answer a range of questions: How are underserved communities, newcomers and aging populations particularly impacted by Canada’s lack of affordable housing? How do urbanization, gentrification and generational wealth come into play?

EMPOWERING THE FUTURE GENERATION

November 1 | Hosted by VP Finance and Administration

Grade nine students across Canada will join their parents to get a first-hand look at their workday and workplace. This year’s SFU event showcases interactive activities and sessions on electromagnetism, food security and computer science.
