UNIVERSITY NEWS

The Teaching Support Staff Union (TSSU) continues to hold an indefinite teaching work stoppage at all campus locations and has announced plans to picket: 

  • Wednesday, Oct. 4 – SFU Surrey Campus 
  • Thursday, Oct. 5 – SFU Burnaby Campus 
  • Friday, Oct. 6 – SFU Vancouver Campus 

Please note that all SFU campuses are open and accessible to faculty, staff and students who wish to enter picketed buildings, including all access points and parking lots. If you have difficulty accessing campus during strike action, please submit a Strike Incident Report Form.

We are pleased that we have a confirmed bargaining session with TSSU tomorrow, October 4 and are looking forward to resuming negotiations. The university is committed to continuing bargaining until an agreement is reached. HOUSE OF NI'ISJOOHL POLE COMES HOME AFTER 94 YEARS

On September 29, the Nass Valley in Northwest British Columbia witnessed an event of profound significance. The memorial pole returned to its homeland, embraced by the arms of its ancestral community. The rematriation process was led by Sigidimnak Nox̱s Ts’aawit (Amy Parent), associate professor and Canada Research Chair in Indigenous Education and Governance. This initiative is the culmination of a year-long dialogue and close collaboration between the Nisg̱a'a Lisims Government and National Museums Scotland.

 

CELEBRATE OCTOBER 2023 CONVOCATION

Each fall, the SFU community gathers for a milestone occasion: celebrating graduands and their accomplishments. More than 1,200 graduands will cross the Convocation stage during four ceremonies held October 5 and 6 at the Burnaby campus. SCIENCE FICTION TO REALITY: ANTIMATTER'S GRAVITATIONAL TALE

An international team of scientists, including SFU professor emeritus of physics Michael Hayden, answered a question that has puzzled the physics world for decades: Does antimatter fall up, or down? For the first time ever, scientists have observed that antimatter falls down and is affected by gravity. The findings published this week in Nature help deepen our understanding of the universe.

More than 500 SFU community members came together for this year’s Terry Fox Run. Together, the university community raised more than $20,000 for cancer research through the Terry Fox Foundation.

OCTOBER SFU'S MEDICAL SCHOOL UPDATE

Over the past month the SFU Medical School has moved forward with its founding dean search, welcomed an acting associate dean Indigenous health and continued to make progress towards upcoming key milestones.

 

ANNOUNCING THE ASSOCIATE DEAN OF INDIGENOUS HEALTH FOR SFU MEDICAL SCHOOL

Doctor, medical health officer, professor, father, runner and actor, Dr. Evan Adams has done it all. He is now taking on a new opportunity at the university's medical school. Read more about Adams' journey and his plans for transforming health care in British Columbia.

 

NEW EV CHARGING OPTIONS AT THE BURNABY CAMPUS

Located on the West Parkade 7000 level, these chargers will provide 14 new, level-two EV charging ports and stalls reserved for those with accessibility needs. With these additions, there are now close to 100 charging port options at the Burnaby campus and these enhancements align with SFU's 2022-2025 Strategic Sustainability and Climate Action Plan goals.

10TH ANNIVERSARY OF ORANGE SHIRT DAY WITH FOUNDER PHYLLIS WEBSTAD

October 4 | Hosted by Office for Aboriginal Peoples

Phyllis Webstad, who is Northern Secwépemc (Shuswap) from the Stswecem’c Xget’tem First Nation has shared her personal story and facilitated important dialogue for the past decade. Attend this special Burnaby campus event to raise awareness of the legacy and ongoing impacts of the Indian Residential School system and honour those impacted. Later this week, Webstad will receive an honorary degree at SFU in recognition of her exceptional contribution to the public good at the Convocation morning ceremony on October 6.
