TSLEIL-WAUTUTH NATION AND SFU SIGN AGREEMENT TO ADVANCE RECONCILIATION

Representatives from səlilwətaɬ (the Tsleil-Waututh Nation) celebrated the signing of a Relationship Protocol Agreement with SFU at a ceremony held at the Burnaby campus on September 6. The agreement marks a formal commitment from both parties to work together, strengthen their relationship and advance reconciliation. The Tsleil-Waututh Nation will provide guidance to support the university's ongoing decolonizing and Indigenizing work. 

 

RESEARCHERS HEAD TO TEXAS TO STUDY ASTRONAUT CARDIOVASCULAR HEALTH IN SPACE

Members from Andrew Blaber’s Aerospace Physiology Lab are connecting with astronauts who are participating in a CARDIOBREATH study. The study examines how the cardiovascular and respiratory systems of astronauts adapt to the weightlessness their bodies experience while in space. As part of the study these astronauts wore a Bio-Monitor shirt while in space, that collected data on blood pressure, breathing, heart rate and functioning of the heart muscle through electrocardiogram monitoring.

SFU TAKES NEXT STEPS TO UPHOLD TRUTH AND RECONCILIATION

To strengthen Indigenous staff recruitment and retention, the B.C. Human Rights Commissioner approved SFU’s application to legally post and hire 15 Indigenous staff. This initiative supports recommendations from the 2017 Walk this Path With Us report. SFU’s application process for an additional targeted hiring of Indigenous faculty is underway.

 

BE A CHAMPION FOR TERRY'S CAUSE

Do you want to walk, ride, wheel or run and fundraise as a group? Become a team captain and register with your colleagues for the Terry Fox Run at your campus. Help SFU meet its goal of raising $10,000 for cancer research in the name of former SFU student and Canadian hero, Terry Fox.

 

The search process for a founding dean of the SFU Medical School (SFUMS) is underway. It is important to gather input from the university community on the qualities, attributes, types of experience, opportunities and challenges of the SFUMS founding dean. Please consider contributing in the following ways:

  • Open Forum: Thursday, September 21, 1-2 p.m. (in person on Burnaby Campus or via zoom). Details will be posted on the search webpage. As in-person spots are limited, please register in advance.
  • Feedback Survey: Open until Monday, September 25. Consider providing your comments via the web survey.
