TAKE PART IN THE PRESIDENTIAL RE-ELECTION PROCESS

SFU’s Board of Governors has embarked on the re-appointment review process for incumbent president, Dr. Joy Johnson. Your opinion is important: all SFU faculty, staff and students are invited to get involved in the process, share their perspective, and ask questions at the open forums taking place on September 18. Please note that there is one session for faculty and staff at 10:30am and a separate session for students at 2:00pm. SFU SURREY CAMPUS OPERATIONS MEMBER RECEIVES STAFF ACHIEVEMENT AWARD

Todd Mann is the facilities services project manager and the go-to-person-for-everything at the Surrey campus. From historical details to facilities inquiries to the successful execution of key construction projects, Mann’s contributions have been remarkable. He enjoys his work and keeps students in mind while improving the Surrey campus experience.

 

THE COMPLEXITIES OF CROWDFUNDING

Crowdfunding can be a lifesaver, says health sciences professor Jeremy Synder, but it can also raise privacy concerns and reflect existing inequities in society. His new book explores the wider historical and ethical context of giving practices.

RESOURCES + OPERATIONAL UPDATES

The university is pleased to have reached agreements with APSA, CUPE Local 3338 and Poly Party, and is actively engaged in collective bargaining with SFUFA and TSSU. SFU is committed to collaborative negotiations, with the goal of meeting the core interests of all parties and upholding the sustainable interests of the entire SFU community, within the Province’s 2022 Shared Recovery Mandate. CALL FOR NOMINATIONS: HONORARY DEGREES FOR 2024

The Senate Committee on University Honours invites members of the community to nominate deserving people for an honorary degree. The highest honour conferred by the university, honorary degrees are awarded to distinguished individuals in recognition of their achievements or for their exceptional contributions to the public. Deadline to submit nominations is September 25, 2023

Please note: If you have already submitted for 2024, all of your supporting documentation may not have been received and we kindly ask you to re-submit the nomination.

BURNABY CAMPUS CONSTRUCTION NOTICE: AQ COURTYARD PIPE WORK

On September 19-20, noise and odour will emit from a diesel pump near the Terry Fox statue on the north side of the AQ Courtyard. Continuous work will be carried out both days from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. This work will flush out our new pipes with cleaning chemicals to be ready for use later in the fall. 

The start of the fall semester is the busiest time for parking at SFU. If you’re not on Burnaby campus early and are struggling with finding a spot in your regular lot, head over to the Residence West Lot where there tends to be more parking availability during this time of year.

THE SCHOOL OF COMMUNICATION'S 50TH ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION KICKS OFF TODAY

September 14 | Hosted by School of Communication

Attend the first keynote talk happening today as part of the school's 50th anniversary celebration. Paola Ricaurte is an associate professor in the Department of Media and Digital Culture at Tecnológico de Monterrey and faculty associate at the Berkman Klein Center for Internet & Society at Harvard University. Ricaurte will deliver her talk "Communication, Power and Knowledge in Automated Societies" with a reception to follow.

 

SFU STREETFEST! 2023

September 15-16 | Hosted by SFU Ancilliary Services

The fifth free annual SFU StreetFest! happens this Friday and Saturday at UniverCity. This year’s festivities include artisans, buskers, food trucks, games as well as a main stage filled with musicians and singers.

 

September 18 | Hosted by Biological Sciences

Attend a seminar by Chelsey Geralda Armstrong, a historical ecologist and archaeologist specializing in ancient human land-use in the Pacific Northwest. She is an assistant professor and director of the Historical-Ecological Research Lab in Indigenous Studies and associate member in the School of Resource and Environmental Management at SFU. This presentation will provide an overview of forest garden ethnoecology, archaeology and functional ecology in Ts’msyen, Coast Salish and Nuu-chah-nulth contexts, while challenging still-held narratives about people and their contested homelands.
