EVERY CHILD MATTERS    

September 30 is National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, also known as Orange Shirt Day. Events and activities commemorating Orange Shirt Day will take place starting September 25. Reflect and come together in the spirit of reconciliation, as we honour those who have been impacted by Canada’s residential school system.

 

CELEBRATING A RESEARCH MILESTONE

Today marks the 100th instalment of SFU's Scholarly Impact of the Week. Thank you to all of the scholars who have participated in the series and congratulations on your outstanding research.

 

STARRY NIGHTS VIRTUALLY EXPANDS THE OUT-OF-THIS-WORLD EXPERIENCE

You've likely heard about Starry Nights, a weekly star party at the Burnaby campus for astronomy enthusiasts. But did you know that once a month, starting on September 29, SFU's Faculty of Science will livestream from the Trottier Observatory? Tune in from the comfort of your home and gaze at the stars and planets above. 

 
 

RESOURCES + OPERATIONAL UPDATES

SFU's bargaining team and the TSSU bargaining committee continued collective bargaining on September 18 and 20, with another date scheduled for September 25. The university has reiterated its request to meet twice-per-week until an agreement is reached, and is awaiting response from TSSU leadership to schedule bargaining dates beyond September 25. 

SFU's bargaining team approaches these negotiations collaboratively, with the goal of meeting the core interests of all parties and upholding the sustainable interests of the entire SFU community. Learn more about negotiations by reading the latest updates on the Collective Bargaining central hub

The Senate Committee on University Honours invites members of the community to nominate deserving people for an honorary degree. The highest honour conferred by the university, honorary degrees are awarded to distinguished individuals in recognition of their achievements or for their exceptional contributions to the public. Deadline to submit nominations is September 25.

Please note, if you have already submitted for 2024, we may not have received all of your supporting documentation and kindly ask you to resubmit the nomination.

There will be temporary roadway traffic changes tomorrow, September 22 (12:45 p.m. - 2:00 p.m.) to allow Terry Fox Event participants to safely walk, run or wheel along the route. Watch for volunteers and traffic control personnel and follow signage on Gaglardi Way, South Campus Road and Science Road.  

The search committee is looking for input on the qualities, attributes and types of experience needed for the incoming dean. A recording of this afternoon’s open forum will be posted tomorrow, September 22 on the search webpage. Please provide your comments via a web survey, open until September 25. The committee thanks you for participating in this important process.

Volunteers are needed to serve as emergency wardens and assist in safeguarding SFU campuses. The role involves helping with direct evacuations and ensuring community safety. No prior experience is required and online training is provided.

This year is the 43rd anniversary of Terry Fox's Marathon of Hope. Join the SFU community to honour his legacy by participating in this annual event held at all three SFU campuses and by raising funds to support cancer research.

 

UNGRADING: AN UNCONVENTIONAL APPROACH TO STUDENT ASSESSMENTS

September 25 | Hosted by Biological Sciences and SFU Teaching Matters

Facilitators will share their classroom experiences with ungrading and the removal of traditionally graded components like quizzes and worksheets. Ungrading is when students suggest their own grade based on a thoughtful self-assessment of their work.

 

ENGAGING STUDENTS FOR DEEPER LEARNING IN LARGER CLASSES

September 27 | Hosted by Centre for Educational Excellence

Do you want to increase student participation in large lectures? In this interactive workshop, participants will explore engagement strategies and active learning practices.

 

COPYRIGHT IN THE CLASSROOM: WORKSHOPS FOR INSTRUCTORS

Did you know? All of these activities can implicate copyright infringement:

  • Uploading readings or other materials into Canvas
  • Including photos, diagrams or maps in PowerPoint slides
  • Using blogs or social media in your courses
  • Teaching remotely

Attend virtual workshops on either September 27 or September 28 to learn how to use copyright protected materials in remote teaching. The workshops will also include finding materials with fewer restrictions such as Open Access and other openly-licensed works as well as your rights as course material creators.
