CIHR INSTITUTE OF GENDER AND HEALTH OPENS VANCOUVER OFFICE, HOSTS NATION-WIDE LISTENING TOUR

The Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) Institute of Gender and Health (IGH), led by scientific director and Faculty of Health Sciences professor Angela Kaida, is celebrating the opening of its new office at SFU’s Vancouver campus, located at Harbour Centre.

The team is currently conducting a Listening Tour with virtual focus groups and hybrid townhall events to learn how IGH can best resource and support advancements in sex, gender science and health equity.

 

CAN STATISTICS BE FUN? AT FLORENCE NIGHTINGALE DAY, THE ANSWER WAS YES

A group of high school students were recent participants in the first-ever Florence Nightingale Day (FN Day) at SFU, organized by the Canadian Statistical Sciences Institute (CANSSI) and the SFU Department of Statistics & Actuarial Science.

The event aimed to give a new generation, especially students from non-traditional and under-represented group, the opportunity to explore educational and career opportunities in statistical sciences. The students' eager participation demonstrated that future statisticians are diverse, creative and enthusiastic.

 

IS MY DNA MY PROPERTY? FEMINIST SCIENCE STUDIES SCHOLAR WEIGHS IN

SFU Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences professor Coleman Nye suggests that feminist science studies can cast an illuminating lens on questions about biological “property” in medical science. Nye is a professor at the Department of Gender, Sexuality & Women’s Studies, where she conducts research at the intersection of feminist science and technology studies, graphic medicine and performance studies.

CHATGPT CONVERSATION: BALANCING OPPORTUNITIES AND CHALLENGES

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is rapidly transforming various aspects of modern life, and education is no exception. Recently, the Centre for Educational Excellence (CEE) at SFU conducted a two-part workshop exploring the integration, prevention or detection of AI writing tools, such as ChatGPT, in educational settings. These workshops served as a platform for participants to discuss the potential benefits and challenges of incorporating AI-powered tools in the learning process.

APRIL COLLECTIVE BARGAINING UPDATE

SFU is in active negotiation with each of the university’s employee groups. The university is committed to providing regular updates on collective bargaining with each group. CONVOCATION ASSISTANCE NEEDED | JUNE 6-9

Convocation is a significant milestone for Simon Fraser University graduands, their families and friends, and the university community.

This year, Spring Convocation will happen Tuesday, June 6 to Friday, June 9. There are eight ceremonies (two per day) and you can select your available times when you register.

INTERROBANG: A GAME TO GET TO KNOW YOURSELF AND OTHERS

InterroBang is a card game developed by the Sexual Violence Support and Prevention Office for players to share their thoughts, ideas and experiences on a range of topics related to relationships, consent, boundaries, cultural differences and sex positivity. Faculty and staff are welcome to borrow a set for their class or students in their department.

May 4 | Hosted by the Canadian Institute of Statistical Sciences 

Microaggressions are words and actions that can cause unintended offense to members of marginalized groups. This session, facilitated by Sandra Miles from Academic Impressions, will help participants identify and define microaggressions and develop skills to prevent and respond to them.

 

INDIGENOUS STUDENTS, FACULTY AND STAFF COMMUNITY CIRCLE

May 11 | Hosted by SFU

Indigenous students, faculty and staff are invited to a gathering hosted by the President, the Provost and Vice-President Academic pro tem and the Vice-President People, Equity and Inclusion.

At the event, Chris Lewis, Director, Indigenous Initiatives and Reconciliation will share updates on a proposed Indigenous university governance structure. Various working groups are also making progress toward establishing new Indigenous leadership positions at SFU, as recommended in the SFU-ARC report and the subsequent Pathways Report. Co-leads of the working groups will share key duties and responsibilities of the new roles and they will be seeking feedback.

This is a free event for Indigenous community members to connect with each other, shape new roles to increase Indigenous participation and decision-making at all levels of the university and enjoy a delicious lunch catered by Salishan Catering.
