SIX LEADERS HONOURED FOR COMMUNITY IMPACT

Amyn and Shein Rajan received the 2023 President's Distinguished Community Leadership Award. The university also honoured four recipients of the Chancellor’s Distinguished Service Award: Elizabeth Model for her contributions toward the growth of Surrey; Kali Stierle for her service and dedication to the Indigenous student community at SFU and beyond; and SFU Black Caucus founding members Henry Daniel and June Francis for building a better SFU through equity and racial justice.

 

PRIDE PARADE RECAP

"The experience of being surrounded by your community, and people you can relate to, is really quite moving," says Kirk Hill, assistant dean, external relations at SFU Beedie and one of the lead organizers for SFU's first Pride parade appearance as an institution. With a rich queer history at the university, the organizing team hopes this event will be the beginning of a more connected 2S/LGBTQIA+ community on campus.

 

INTRODUCING SFU'S 2023 SCHULICH LEADER SCHOLARS

New undergraduate students Alexander Charnetski and Lilian Pham were drawn to science, technology, engineering and math because of their shared passion for building things for the betterment of society. When asked what they’re most looking forward to during their studies, both Charnetski and Pham cite the same reason: making a positive difference.

 

MECHATRONICS PROFESSOR INDUCTED INTO INTERNATIONAL HALL OF FAME

Mechatronic systems engineering director and professor John Shen was inducted into the International Symposium on Power Semiconductor Devices and ICs Hall of Fame. The bestowment recognized Shen for his significant contributions to advancing power semiconductor technology.

NEW ACTING DIRECTOR FOR SUSTAINABLE ENERGY ENGINEERING SCHOOL

Professor of professional practice Zafar Adeel joined the School of Sustainable Energy Engineering (SEE) as an acting director for a two-year term beginning August 1. The school expresses gratitude to SEE lecturer Mehran Ahmadi for his service as acting director in the past year as he navigated the school during a period of transition.

Work continues for the Lorne Davies Complex (LDC) renewal project. Starting August 15th, East Gym will be temporarily closed following previous updates and closures. Users with accessibility needs can take the stair lift between the Central and West Gym to access level 100, and the West Gym elevator to access levels 0 & 00. Please take extra care when walking around the construction zone and follow signage directions and route changes.

HOT WATER SERVICE INTERRUPTION ON BURNABY CAMPUS

From Friday, August 18 to Sunday, August 20 a service interruption is required for important boiler house maintenance work. Student Residences and Dining Commons will not be affected. Cold drinking water and water for washing will remain operational. There will be residual heat in the hot water storage tanks. Safety showers and eye wash stations may see reduced water temperatures. Normal operations and hot water will resume by the morning of Monday, August 21.

Following a successful pilot program at the Surrey campus, e-waste recycling is now available across all SFU campuses. By recycling more electronics, the SFU community can collectively contribute to reducing landfill waste.

This workshop will explore the ways in which different social identities intersect and impact the experiences of 2S/LGBTQIA+ individuals. Speakers will also share strategies for promoting intersectional inclusion and advocacy.

 

TEACH STUDENTS HOW TO TEACH: FALL TEACHING INNOVATION LAB

Do you want to inspire your students to take charge of their own learning? Explore how to engage students as collaborators in designing and facilitating your course in this one-day hybrid workshop. The event will feature a panel of SFU instructors and 3M Teaching Fellow Aleksandra Zecevic, a health sciences professor at Western University.
