LABORATORY EXPERT CELEBRATES HIS CAREER GOLDEN JUBILEE

On December 4, 1972 Paul Saunders began working in SFU's chemistry department. Over the past 50 years he has seen the university profoundly change including the quadrupling in size of the department. Saunders remembers when the South Sciences Building, where he works today, used to be a forested area where deer were often seen. He also recalls jogging around University Drive when it was a dirt road. Saunders’ many years of service, dedication to teaching excellence and work to improve safety on campus has earned him a Lifetime Achievement Award.

EXPLORING THE HEALING POWER OF FOOD IN NEW DOCUMENTARY

Tammara Soma is the research director and co-founder of the Food Systems Lab and an assistant professor at SFU's School of Resource and Environmental Management. She also co-wrote and co-directed her first documentary, Food is My Teacher, with award-winning filmmaker Brandy Yanchyk, which will air on CBC later this month. In Food is My Teacher, the filmmakers travel across BC and Alberta on a journey to learn how food is healing within different communities.

Earlier this month, two prominent members of the SFU community were recognized for their inspiring stories and contributions to Canada. Paola Ardiles Gamboa, a senior lecture in the Faculty of Health Sciences and Sobhana Jaya-Madhavan, associate vice-president of external relations, received Top 25 Canadian Immigrant Awards at a ceremony in Toronto.

Paola Ardiles Gamboa was a child when she and her family fled the persecution and terror of Chile’s military junta in the ’70s. The memory of her family’s flight combined with the sacrifices of her parents helped form her strong values.

For Sobhana Jaya-Madhavan, being honoured with a Top 25 Canadian Immigrant Awards is a moment to look back on her journey to Canada and on the value of authentic leadership, volunteering and community service.

CREE CODING DECOLONIZES COMPUTER PROGRAMMING

Professor Jon Corbett from SFU’s School of Interactive Art and Technology has developed a computer programming language that uses nehiyawewin, or Plains Cree. This ability to program in ancestral languages—or what Corbett calls Indigitization—is a way to respect, share and archive the cultural knowledge vital to the survival of these languages.

COLLECTIVE BARGAINING UPDATES

Collective bargaining continues and the parties have exchanged Settlement Offers twice. SFU’s most recent settlement offer provides SFUFA members with the maximum general wage increases under the Province’s Shared Recovery Mandate.

SFUFA and SFU have reached agreement on many important negotiation proposals, however, there are still several outstanding bargaining issues. The parties are currently exploring scheduling additional bargaining dates into the fall in an effort to reach agreement.

Read more about SFU’s proposal and the outstanding issues on the Collective Bargaining website.

Negotiations continued into July; however no additional bargaining dates have been confirmed and TSSU continues strike action. To date, the university and TSSU have agreed to about half of the 500 non-monetary proposals from TSSU. Though some progress has been made, the university and TSSU leadership remain apart on several fundamental issues.

The university is committed to continuing bargaining toward a collective agreement that aligns with the Province’s mandate, and to working with the TSSU leadership to address the fundamentals within scope of the Certified Bargaining Unit in a way that addresses the core needs of each party and the sustainable interests of the university community.

Read more about SFU’s proposal and outstanding issues on the Collective Bargaining website.

This tentative agreement addresses the core needs of both parties and is consistent with the Province’s 2022 Shared Recovery Mandate. APSA and SFU will go through their respective ratification and approval processes. More details will be communicated once the agreement is confirmed by both parties.

We are pleased to share that the three-year collective agreement between the university and CUPE 3338 has been ratified by all parties and is now in full effect.
