PRESIDENT JOY JOHNSON SHARES FIRST COMMUNITY REPORT

"When I say that I'm proud to be part of the SFU community, I'm talking about the community that we've built together; a community that cares about students, looks out for each other and is always looking for ways to improve." As we approach the beginning of a new school year, President Joy Johnson reflects on what we've achieved and what lies ahead for our community.

 

FIVE RESEARCHERS AWARDED AS CANADA RESEARCH CHAIRS

From improving youth mental wellbeing to managing pandemics to fostering Indigenous governance of watersheds, SFU's new and renewed Canada Research Chairs (CRCs) are making cutting-edge discoveries to help build a better future for generations to come.

 

IN MEMORIAM

It is with great sadness that the SFU community learned of the passing of a beloved member, professor emeritus Simon Verdun-Jones. His contributions to SFU’s School of Criminology and the field of criminology will continue to inspire future generations of students.

 

Alongside the advantages and conveniences of modern digital technology, it brings numerous risks and threats. A recent project helped Surrey students in grades 5-7 acquire knowledge and tools to respond to the challenges of the digital world and empowered them to become responsible digital citizens.

SFU MEDICAL SCHOOL MONTHLY UPDATE

The SFU Medical School will share monthly updates on its planning work, progress towards key milestones and other news. This month's summary features some important leadership updates.

 

EVOLVE E-BIKE ROLLS OUT AT THE BURNABY CAMPUS

Thirty Evolve E-Bikes are now available for students, faculty, staff and visitors at the Burnaby campus to ride on the mountain. The electric pedal-assist bikes are located at nine designated parking zones strategically located across campus, including outside student residences to the west and adjacent the UniverCity neighbourhood to the east.

 

Keep current on institutional updates, upcoming deadlines and stories from across the SFU community that share how we’re collectively working towards our priorities outlined in What’s Next: The SFU Strategy. Starting next week, the Faculty and Staff Dashboard will be added as a shortcut on your desktop and set as the default homepage on all browsers on SFU-managed computers.  

On Thursday, August 31, road work will impact access on University High Street between Tower Road and University Crescent. Eastbound and westbound traffic lanes will be temporarily closed for eight hours. Additionally, there will be temporary single lane traffic along parts of University Crescent, University High Street and Tower Road. Pedestrians may be detoured while work is in progress. Please watch for construction detour signs, equipment and crew working in the area.

The Toronto Raptors will return to the Lower Mainland for their 2023 training camp. Basketball fans will have a chance to see the players during their annual Open Practice on Friday, October 6 at 6 p.m. at the SFU West Gym. Tickets go on sale at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, September 6 and cost between $20 to $40. The Eventbrite link and access code for ticket sales will be available on the SFU Athletics webpage next Wednesday. Net proceeds will go to the SFU Athletics General Fund supporting all varsity programs.
