LEADERSHIP AWARD FOR GUIDING TEAM WITH COMPASSION AND UNWAVERING SUPPORT

Anke Baker was awarded the Staff Achievement Award for her exemplary leadership. After initially joining SFU’s School of Business in 2010, Baker moved to the Department of Geography in 2014, where she serves as manager, academic and administrative services. Baker is described by colleagues as a leader who makes those around her feel trusted, supported and heard.

 

SUPPORTING INDIGENOUS RESURGENCE THROUGH INDIGENOUS ARTS EDUCATION

How do we respectfully bring Indigenous Arts into our teaching practice, especially when we are unable to invite an Indigenous artist to lead our learning? How can we, as non-Indigenous educators or Indigenous educators from different Nations than the art we are sharing, support students to engage in non-appropriative Indigenous Arts practices? These were some of the key questions addressed in a new professional development series for K-12 educators designed and hosted by a cross-disciplinary team from SFU.

 
 

STUDENTS HELP E-PLANE PROJECT TAKE FLIGHT

A team from SFU's Management of Technology MBA program is playing a pivotal role in developing the world's first fully electric commercial aircraft. The team recently completed an industry consulting project with Harbour Air Seaplanes. Capitalizing on their rich backgrounds in technology and business, the students devised strategic proposals, aiding Harbour Air in steering through the burgeoning ePlane market.

 

SCIENCE RESEARCHERS RECEIVE MORE THAN $7M IN FUNDING

The Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada Discovery program announced the newly awarded funding on August 29. The funding provides long-term operating financial support to research programs led by the Faculty of Science in a wide variety of natural sciences and engineering disciplines.

The search process for the founding dean of the SFU Medical School is underway. The Provost invites all members of the community to visit the search website for more information on the search committee, timeline and draft candidate profile. Your input is invited in the following ways:

  • At an open forum on Thursday, September 21, from 1 p.m.-2 p.m. Additional details will be shared soon. The open forum will be recorded and available for viewing on the search website.
  • Through an online feedback survey. The Provost's Office will advise when the survey link is available.

Here is a friendly reminder that we work, learn and live with wildlife on the Burnaby campus. In recent days, there has been an increase in bear sightings in the vicinity. Please ensure you are aware of your surroundings and call Campus Public Safety at 778.782.4500 if you see wildlife.

 

LONG WEEKEND CLOSURE AND NEWSLETTER NOTICE

All SFU campus offices will be closed on Monday, September 4 for Labour Day. Campuses will resume operations on Tuesday, September 5. This newsletter will be delivered as usual. To accommodate office closures, please submit content for next Tuesday's edition by 12 p.m. on Friday, September 1.

SCHOOL OF COMMUNICATION'S 50TH ANNIVERSARY

September 14 | Hosted by SFU School of Communication

In Fall 2023, SFU’s School of Communication will celebrate its 50th anniversary and will feature a program of events that aim to revisit and explore a range of critical scholarship and practice that has been a feature of the School since the beginning. The first event features Paola Ricaurt, an associate professor in the Department of Media and Digital Culture at Tecnológico de Monterrey and faculty associate at the Berkman Klein Center for Internet & Society at Harvard University. Ricaurte will present her talk, Communication, Power and Knowledge in Automated Societies.

 

STREETFEST! 2023

September 15-16 | Hosted by SFU Ancilliary Services

Attend the fifth annual SFU StreetFest! at UniverCity. This year’s festivities include artisans, buskers, food trucks, games as well as a main stage filled with musicians and singers.
