PROVINCIAL GOVERNMENT APPROVES SFU'S PLAN TO HIRE MORE BLACK FACULTY AND STAFF

SFU has reached an important milestone in efforts to build a more inclusive and diverse community. Last month, the B.C. Human Rights Commissioner approved the university's application to legally post and hire roles limited to Black candidates only. The approval to hire 15 Black faculty and 15 Black staff members was part of a student-led motion approved by the SFU Senate in 2021. 

 

DIALOGUE FELLOW HONOURED FOR DEDICATION TO EXPERIENTIAL LEARNING

Diane Finegood has won the Excellence in Teaching Award for her inclusive and thoughtful approach to instruction as well as innovative contributions to pedagogical programming in the Centre for Dialogue. Throughout her career, Finegood also received several accolades for her outstanding work and research in health sciences.

NEW SMART MANUFACTURING HUB LAUNCHED

Housed at the SFU Surrey campus, the Smart Manufacturing Hub is the first-of-its-kind in Western Canada. The space is equipped with a state-of-the-art Industry 4.0 training system that simulates a highly automated smart factory. The hub is embedded with artificial vision, collaborative robots as well as smart devices - serving as the new training ground for industrial innovators.

 
 

RESOURCES + OPERATIONAL UPDATES

After restarting negotiations last week, SFU and the Teaching Support Staff Union (TSSU) will return to the bargaining table on Thursday, July 13 to continue exchanging proposals and working collaboratively toward a negotiated settlement. The university has also updated its statement on the status of benefits for TSSU members and is committed to collaborating with TSSU leadership to ensure members continue to have the coverage they need.

LEARN ABOUT THE INDIGENOUS STUDENT CENTRE AT A VIRTUAL CIRCLE EVENT

July 12 | Hosted by the Indigenous Student Centre (ISC)

The ISC is hosting its first Lunch & Learn session. This event is geared towards faculty, staff and Indigenous students who have yet to connect with the centre. Participants will discover supports, resources and additional opportunities available to them outside of their faculties as well as learn methods of connecting with the ISC that are grounded in trust, humility, respect and reciprocity.

 

EXAMS AND QUIZZES | TEACHING WITH TECH

July 18 | Hosted by Centre for Educational Excellence

This weekly series addresses common technical and teaching-related challenges for instructors new to Canvas or other educational media. In this session led by Michael Goldberg, Instructional Design Technician at SFU, you will explore creating assignments and quizzes from available question sets and assignment options, and learn about grading in Canvas.
