DECOLONIZING GLOBAL PLANETARY HEALTH

To address climate change and global health inequities, a group of SFU researchers recommends an anti-colonial, anti-racist and reciprocal approach. Clifford Atleo (Niis Na'yaa/Kam’ayaam/Chachim’multhnii), SFU resource and environment management professor and expert in community-centred climate innovation, shares what decolonizing global planetary health looks like at SFU and in a British Columbian context.

THROUGH THEIR WORDS: KALI STIERLE

"Most people look at tax accounting and turn in the opposite direction and run, but I find it incredibly dynamic and interesting,” says Kali Stierle, an undergraduate pursuing her BBA, concentrating in accounting with a minor in Indigenous studies. Stierle, who is Nêhiyaw (Cree), Métis, German and a member of Peepeekisis Cree Nation, advocates for economic empowerment and sovereignty for Indigenous nations across Canada. She plans to use her knowledge and skills to further the Indigenous economy in a fair and sustainable way.

The SFU community continues to celebrate new alumni who crossed the stage at convocation last week. Here are some more spotlights from various faculties:

Emma Savić Kallesøe, recipient of the Faculty of Communication, Art and Technology Dean's Convocation Medal, had a rewarding experience both on stage and behind the scenes. She refers to herself as a meticulous introvert with a love for performance and plans to pursue further studies in theatre.

Originally from Deir Ezzor, Syria, Mohammad Alhannash always had a deep passion for the English language. After completing his bachelor's degree in English and a master's degree in linguistics, Alhannash joined SFU to enhance his language teaching skills and pursue a PhD.

Food systems planning researcher Elina Blomley graduates with a master of resource management in planning this month. She learned from food growers around British Columbia and started thinking about food systems. Reflecting on what drew her to this area of study, Blomley shares, “Food helped me connect to community and land.”

Russell Zhang receives the FASS Dean's Undergraduate Medal for his academic excellence. He graduates with a 4.15 CGPA, landing him in the top five per cent among his peers. Zhang is also a passionate soccer fan who used a class assignment to build a microeconomic model of The Super League, a new soccer league.

RESOURCES + OPERATIONAL UPDATES

SFU is currently engaging in collective bargaining with all of its employee groups, along with other public sector employers in British Columbia. As of 7 a.m. June 15, job action is taking place at SFU Burnaby campus. For the most up-to-date information, please see our bargaining updates page and connect with your supervisor or employee group.

The university is aware that members of the Teaching Support Staff Union (TSSU) are concerned about the continuation of their benefits. To be clear, at this time the University has not removed or suspended benefits from any TSSU members. All eligible TSSU members are still covered under their regular benefit plan.

The Teaching Support Staff Union is picketing at select locations on Burnaby campus as of 7 a.m. We expect everyone to be respectful of strike action, however, SFU is hopeful that the parties can resume negotiations at the bargaining table as soon as possible. Additional guidance for picket lines has been added to the Collective Bargaining Central Hub.

The SFU Medical School has successfully submitted its draft business case to the provincial government.
