OFFICE FOR ABORIGINAL PEOPLES ANNUAL NEWSLETTER HAS ARRIVED

Discover various Indigenous initiatives, accomplishments and milestones over the past year including advancement of safe and welcoming spaces at all three campuses for Indigenous students. In addition, the First Peoples’ Gathering House project slated for completion in 2024 is highlighted as well as the enhancement of Indigenous governance, leadership, programs and scholarship activities.

 

HIGH SCHOOL STUDENT PARTNERS WITH SFU MUSIC SPECIALIST

An ambitious research idea emerged after Burnaby eighth grader Advaith S. Iyer participated in the Greater Vancouver Regional Science Fair. Seeking to test cognitive load through a complex experiment, his high school laboratory equipment proved insufficient. Iyer’s mother, a health science professional, reached out to SFU’s Institute for Neuroscience and Neurotechnology, where neuroscientist and musician Sarah Faber provided him with the necessary tools and guidance to bring his blueprint to life.

 

THROUGH THEIR WORDS: ASHLEY KYNE

"As I was learning about Indigenous overrepresentation in the criminal justice system, I was also being taught Indigenous perspectives on history and what led us here... This experience also helped me work through my own identity as an Indigenous person...," reflects Ashley Kyne, a student of iTaukei (Indigenous Fijian) ancestry. Kyne recently graduated with a BA in criminology and Indigenous studies and is currently pursuing a master’s degree in criminology.

 
 

RESOURCES + OPERATIONAL UPDATES

On June 15, the Teaching Support Staff Union (TSSU) picketed on the Burnaby campus. This week, the university has not been made aware of any further planned picketing dates, but TSSU strike action continues in the form of an overtime ban and teach-ins during tutorials. Current information about bargaining status as well as past bargaining updates can be found on the Collective Bargaining website, and the university will continue to keep the community informed and up-to-date.

 

AN INTERGENERATIONAL CONVERSATION ON QUEER ASIA

Helen Leung is a professor and chair of the Department of Gender, Sexuality & Women’s Studies (GSWS) and co-director of the Institute for Transpacific Cultural Research. On the Transpacific Stories podcast, Leung chats with scholars about family, sense of belonging and migration histories. In a special Pride Month episode, GSWS faculty member Carman Fung joins Leung for an intergenerational conversation on queer Asia.

 

ACCEPTING APPLICATIONS FOR STREETFEST! 2023

Calling all artists, crafters, entrepreneurs, musicians and performers to showcase their work to the Burnaby Mountain community at the upcoming StreetFest! 2023 happening on September 15th. Application deadline is July 15th, 2023.
