CELEBRATING NATIONAL INDIGENOUS PEOPLES DAY

To honour and highlight the culture, heritage and diversity of Indigenous Peoples across Turtle Island and across SFU's campuses, Indigenous students, faculty and staff share an introduction about their cultural and geographical background.

 

DETERMINATION WINS SAURO THE 2022 STAFF ACHIEVEMENT AWARD

As Jovanna Sauro began her role as an Executive Assistant to the Chief Information Officer in IT Services in 2020 she was also accepted into the Master of Education (Health and Active Living program). In that same year, Sauro was diagnosed with cancer. To say it was a whirlwind would be an understatement. Through it all, she excelled with positivity and she is the recipient of the 2022 Staff Achievement Award in Personal Achievement.

 

THROUGH THEIR WORDS: MATHEW FLEURY

Mathew Fleury, a PhD candidate in health sciences, is a Nēhiyawak (Plains Cree) and a proud member of one of the founding families of the Métis Nation, where he has deep roots in Manitoba’s Red River Valley. Fleury draws on his experiences to apply grassroots approaches in research and policy. "I come from a long line of Indigenous leaders on both sides of my family, and so having a strong sense of social justice is an innate thing for me, I’ve always had a deep longing to address and fix what doesn’t feel right."

 

AWARD-WINNING PROJECT SHARES STORIES FROM XINJIANG, CHINA

Incoming SFU postdoctoral fellow Guldana Salimjan, international studies professor Darren Byler and scholars at the University of British Columbia created the Xinjiang Documentation Project to provide an understanding of what ethnic Uyghurs and Kazakhs experience on a daily basis. The joint project provides a platform for documenting state crimes and the lived experiences of these minorities in China.

 

In recognition of National Indigenous History Month, SFU's School of Contemporary Arts members will engage in a series of three interviews. The first of the series is a conversation between Taryn Walker and Krystle Silverfox who celebrate the achievements and thoughtfulness of students and alumni.

TAMARA VROOMAN RE-APPOINTED AS CHANCELLOR

SFU's Board of Governors is pleased to announce the re-appointment of Tamara Vrooman as Chancellor. The university chancellor's role is to confer all degrees and represent the university in an official capacity within the larger community as one of the university's chief ambassadors. Vrooman has long been a champion of the university and was recognized for her contributions to SFU and the community with an honorary degree in 2016.

 

It's easy to forget your password. Fortunately as an SFU account holder, you have access to a feature that allows you to reset your password without contacting the IT Service Desk. This makes it quicker to restore access as long as your external email address is up to date.

 

Are you ready to test your knowledge of all things Indigenous? Take the annual Ultimate National Indigenous Peoples Day Quiz, presented by SFU's Office of Aboriginal Peoples, and enter in a draw for a coffee gift card. The quiz has categories for children and adults and is open until June 26, 2023 at 12:00 p.m. PST.

 

The Senate Committee on University Honours invites members of the community to nominate deserving people for an honorary degree. The highest honour conferred by the university, honorary degrees are awarded to distinguished individuals in recognition of their achievements or for their exceptional contributions to the public. Deadline to submit nominations is September 25, 2023.

LAUNCH OF A NEW CLIMATE CENTRIC PROGRAM

June 26 | Hosted by SFU Continuing Studies

Lack of action is causing climate emergency to emerge as one of the biggest threats facing our planet. SFU Continuing Studies is launching the Climate Action Certificate program to help professionals impacted by the climate emergency shift their ideas to action and solutions. Attend an information session held for the online program on Monday, June 26 at 1 pm.

Canvas group and discussion tools can help students connect with the course material and other students. Learn how to use the different discussion tools to promote active participation. Peter Kou and Shashi Seth are the facilitators and they have designed online courses for more than a decade.
